Will Vulnerable Democrats Drown in Schumer's 'Mainstream'?

Senate Democrats facing tough re-election battles in 2018 may have to decide if they want to hang a political anchor around their necks by joining a filibuster against Judge Neil Gorsuch, President Trump's highly credentialed Supreme Court nominee.

Predictably, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) threatened to filibuster Gorsuch in an op-ed on Politico.com and another in The New York Times, demanding 60 votes to confirm, rather than a simple majority as the Constitution allows. Schumer called Gorsuch "very smart, articulate and polite, with superb judicial demeanor" but not "mainstream."

Here's what Schumer thinks is "mainstream." "Senseless in Seattle and San Francisco" sums it up. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco upheld a temporary restraining order issued by a Seattle district court judge against President Trump's order banning entry into the U.S. for 90-120 days by those from Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, and Libya.

Schumer should explain how judges, who aren't privy to a national security briefing, know a shish kabob from Somalia's Al-Shabaab, one of whose thugs beheaded a British soldier in London in 2013. Nonetheless, uninformed judges seized President Trump's plenary power in foreign relations and national security and substituted their ignorant opinions. Foreign nationals, who've never set foot in the United States, now supposedly have due process rights under our Constitution. It's all within the two left banks of Schumer's "mainstream."

Schumer should also explain why he now opposes Gorsuch yet joined in Gorsuch's unanimous confirmation to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals ten years ago.

Gorsuch's record reveals his commitment to uphold the Constitution and laws as written, not those Schumer imagines. Consider:

Judicial duty within the Constitution's separation of powers

Schumer's talking now (CSpan 2). He's totally out of control. I suspect he, Lizzie Warren and Franken (the worst of mnay) will turn off a lot of voters in states where Senate dems are vulnerable.

JMHO

Schumer is a Harry Reid wannabe with glasses on his nose. He shares the same obstructionist traits as Reid, the stupidity of Pelosi, and the obnoxiousness of Cummings, but doesn’t have the creds to gather much momentum.

His antics are only building resolve amongst conservatives to pitch in and help Trump drain the swamp in 2018.

If they’re going to deny Trump the ability to do his job, then we should deny them their jobs. America is too far in the hold to tolerate these infantile games be played by liberals.

The political ads are writing themselves. Dems in red states will be tied to their leadership, and voters in those states will take it out on them.

Manchin is the first to break, more will come.

Not really. They seem to attract the type like fly paper.

Schumer sees very smarmy and condescending in his liberalism. His New York mannerisms rub lots of people the wrong way.

I won’t be surprised is Manchin ends up in GOP. West Virginia once among the bluest of states is now deep red. The #RustyIrony of the Democrats is they are now the exclusive party of the rich and privileged, who see the blue collar working folks as little more than “deplorable” peasants.

Trump should hold rallies in red states with Democrat Senators up for re-election in 2018... and invite them to these rallies. That’d be a hoot don’tcha think?

Democrats should not be allowed to simply THREATEN to filibuster, I want to see them get up and TALK through all their reasons for not wanting to support a particular nominee in a bid for the Supreme Court, talk and talk and talk until they wet or soil themselves on the podium, they fall down from exhaustion, they develop laryngitis, or they just get so bored with it they abandon the floor.

I doubt if they could make it last for twelve hours.

Or Mitch McConnell could simply pull the trigger on the “nuclear option”, blowing up the last category preserved for filibustering at all.

The more the Democrats remain SILENT on the “protests”, and the louder they become on anti-gun legislation, simultaneously, the more they will destroy themselves in 2018.

Hear hear. I don’t get why they do the kabuki of the “threatened filibuster”. It really is exactly like that Star Trek episode where those two planets fight via computer simulation, which had “allowed” the war to go on for centuries. Do it for real!

The infamous “Rule 19” we hear so much about during Liewatha’s stunt last week also has a provision called The Two-Speech Rule or something like that. The Senate can declare its legislative “day” to be whatever they want, and each Senator is allowed two speeches during that “day”. That would wear them out in the same way a straight-up filibuster would.

Then there’s the old recess appointment maneuver as well.

His off-the-wall actions indicates Sen Schumer is becoming unhinged....

The poor, poor man (sob).

Everybody knows the realization that your own president stabbed his party in the back is heart-breaking (sniffle).

Sen Schumer is broken-hearted b/c Obama handed his famous state-of-the-art presidential election campaign apparat – the data, the staff, the fundraising – to his non-profit Organizing for Action -- NOT to the needy Democratic Party -- as a loyal party member would be expected to do.

More troubling for broken-hearted Sen Schumer is the realization that eight years after Obama came into office, the once-proud Democratic Party is decimated at every level of federal, state and local government.

Democrats are mired in failure, thanks to putting their trust in Obama.

It's disconcerting for guileless Democrats to observe that Obama seems to delight in destruction.....whether its going after Republicans....or failing to come to the aid of his own down-and-out party.
