The California Department of Water Resources issued a sudden evacuation order shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday for residents near the Oroville Dam in northern California, warning that the dam’s emergency spillway would fail in the next 60 minutes.

The Oroville Dam is the highest in the nation.

Pumping grout against a water flow? Yea, that will work.

I was up on my roof yesterday with some Dow asphalt goop stuff - says it works wet or dry. (Except it is pouring down rain now - I’m not working in THAT!) Anyway - maybe a few million tubes of that stuff might work.

Oh, to be fair, the downstream side of the emergency spillway is dry at the moment, and that is where they are laying the boulders and concrete. I hope they are making good progress and that the rains hold off a bit.

Just looked at the forecast, next rain is coming in Weds. evening and will last through Friday, with a total of about 2.5 inches of rain. Hopefully that won’t over run the top.

They have backed off on precip totals, but this little gem remains in the forecast:

This system moves in quickly and is pretty much done by Thursday
evening, so the short duration of this event will limit storm
total precipitation amounts. Although we can`t rule out a short
period of moderate to locally heavy precipitation that could bring
some minor flooding concerns to areas already affected by recent
floods, including rivers in northeast CA (Pit, Susan, Middle Fork
Feather), and smaller creeks around the Tahoe basin. -Edan

Last pictures I saw from yesterday had both the main and emergency spillways with water appearing from the area under them. If there is water “leaking” around or under the structures then it is a very dire situation.

I think it was on this thread, but there is discussion on other sites about water appearing around and from under both spillways. About a third of the way down the page at this link there is an image that shows how close the erosion is to the emer spillway.

To: maggief; All

please post any new live shots of the main spillway this morning so we can compare any new erosion since yesterday

I don’t trust them at all, they said erosion was minimal on the e-spillway as late as sunday while i was looking at videos showing the complete opposite

Many thanks to the many posters who have kept this the best source for information on this potentially catastrophic situation. The links and comments are outstanding.

The main stream media is WAY behind.

We should all remember: The water distribution system that depends on this dam supplies 2/3 of the people in California with drinking water, in addition to the role it plays in California agriculture. It also supplies a significant amount of electricity.

I have seen no mention of the damage to these systems, but it is clear that the power generation has stopped. The main power house has been reported flooded, and repairs will take at least months. The water that would normally go through the generators has stopped as well.

My son-in-law is an engineer with expertise in dam electrical generation. He tells me that even if the dam’s ability to send water through the generators has not been damaged it will still not be possible to send normal amounts of water through until the generators are able to go back on line. The reason is that the hydrostatic head is so high that the force of the water must be controlled by operation of the generators or it will cause substantial damage on the way out. He has been in charge of draining and repairing damaged lakes and knows what he’s talking about.

Why don’t the people in charge tell the public to put their garden hoses in the gutter and turn them on full blast for a day or so?

TWC guy 4:13 remaining mark: (Paraphrasing) Forecast rain will not be enough to fill the lake again, would need months of rain to fill the lake so far that would create that situation over again.
