The Senate narrowly confirmed Betsy DeVos as education secretary on Tuesday, with Vice President Pence casting a historic tiebreaking vote after senators deadlocked over her fitness for the job.
The entire Democratic caucus of 48 senators voted against DeVos, as did two Republicans, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine, who said they did not think that DeVos was qualified for the job. The remaining 50 Republicans voted for DeVos, setting up a 50-50 tie that Pence broke with his vote at about 12:30 p.m.
It marked the first time that a vice presidents tiebreaking vote was needed to confirm a Cabinet secretary, according to Daniel Holt, an assistant historian in the Senate Historical Office.

Approved is approved. The End!!
They did not think DeVos was qualified for the job because she is pro school choice, school vouchers and she is against common core, teacher union thugs and failing schools.
They would hate anyone that Trump picked. The school union and lobbyists are very powerful.
which he said would fix the education system already fixed by the 2001 GW Bush and Ted Kennedy legislation called No Child Left Behind,
which was supposed to fix a system supposedly already fixed by a 1994 piece of federal legislation called Goals 2000,
which was supposed to fix a system already fixed by America 2000,
which was a 1991 response during the Bush administration to a 1983 federal report on education called A Nation at Risk,
which was published a full four years after Jimmy Carter first fixed the nations public school system by establishing a cabinet-level Department of Education in 1979.
Our forefathers knew....that someday it would be necessary to break a tie....no big deal.
If we can keep it to two RINO defections, we’re OK.
Yes. Her power still the same
I don’t think qualification question had a lot to do with it...That was their excuse...
You hit on the head though, that ANYONE (no matter qualifications) that Trump nominated, would be hated and given such a hard time...
The NEA is literally shitting bricks as I type.
Time to break the back of the indoctrination/meritocracy cartel.
Several of my wife’s friends on facebook who are “teachers” are having complete meltdowns. I want so bad to ask them why they despise me as a parent having a choice where to educate my kids and the next question I want to ask a couple of them is if you are so great and your school is so wonderful at educating our kids why are you sending yours to private schools?
What do they call a student who graduates LAST in Medical School?
Doctor.
A win is a win.
This will free up Sessions to start draining the swamp at Justice.
They did not think DeVos was qualified for the job because she is pro school choice, school vouchers and she is against common core, teacher union thugs and failing schools.
I like that!
That's not because DeVos was controversial. Its because the Dems have become completely unhinged.
Can someone give me a quote on today’s riot rates?
Exactly! How do you address Ms. DeVos, who squeaked by on a tie-breaking vote by the Vice President?
"Madame Secretary."
There have been lots of street interviews by late-night talk shows before Watters World that show the stupidity of the general populace in cities. Yes, education has failed many people. No grasp of civics and U.S. history or geographical facts. None whatsoever. They think New Mexico is a foreign country. Can't place most countries on a globe of Earth, including the U.S.A. And many of these people went on to college!
I ain’t no ways tired yet.(said with a thick faux accent)
Henry Payne has a good cartoon on the teachers’ union role in this vote...included in today’s collection of Pookie’s toons.
