Mattis Approved by Senate Armed Services Committee to Be SecDef

Retired Marine Gen. James Mattis was approved on Wednesday by the Senate Committee on Armed Services to serve as secretary of defense in Donald Trump’s administration.

Mattis sailed through the committee, which voted 26-1 for him to lead the Pentagon. Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.) was the only member of the Senate panel to vote against the retired four-star general, who enjoys bipartisan support to head the Defense Department under President-elect Trump.

Gillibrand has previously said she would oppose confirming Mattis because he only retired from the Marine Corps in 2013, while federal law requires a seven-year break between military service and heading the Defense Department as a civilian.

This was only about the exemption to the 7 year stip.

Is he in, or does he have to go thru the entire Senate?

I don’t understand the arbitrary 7-year rule. Is that the average time required to brainwash the military out of someone?

As far as “civilian rule” of the defense, he’s been a civilian for about four years. Adding three years doesn’t make him more of a civilian.

All nominees have to be approved by the whole Senate but only if they make it out of committee.

Nope That vote was last week. His exemption was approved by both houses. This vote moves his nomination to the full Senate.

It now goes to the whole Senate for confirmation. It should be a smooth confirmation.

They know there’s no way they can stop any of these people so they will take turns voting NO when it is safe. Same old political horse crap. The difference is they still think when don’t know what they are doing - silly Democrats.

I think Gillibrand would rather have a gay Communist Muslim running the show.

Right. Sure that’s why.
