The Danger of Delegitimizing Trump
Real Clear Politics ^ | January 17, 2017 | Carl M. Cannon & Caitlin Huey-Burns

On January 20, 2001, John Lewis did not attend George W. Bush’s inauguration. He didn’t make a big deal about it, but Bush losing the popular vote coupled with the contentious Florida recount left Lewis feeling less than magnanimous. According to contemporaneous press accounts, the Georgia congressman and civil rights icon spent Inauguration Day in his Atlanta district.

Lewis was hardly the only prominent Democrat who had trouble accepting the new president after the 2000 election was finally decided. Appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Jesse Jackson trashed the U.S. Supreme Court and questioned Bush’s “legitimacy.” Recognizing the starkness of such hyper-partisanship, moderator Tim Russert asked Dick Gephardt if he considered George W. Bush “a legitimate president.” Gephardt, a longtime Democratic congressional leader, refused to grant Bush that status -- though Russert tried three times.

Meanwhile, a Democratic Senate leader was being similarly coy on ABC. Asked by Sam Donaldson if he thought news organizations should undertake their own vote recounts in Florida even if it might “delegitimize” Bush’s presidency, Tom Daschle implied that the latter was already the case. “We already know that Al Gore got more votes in the popular election,” he said....

When the media decided they would criticize every single thing Trump does, no matter what it might be, they gave him carte blanche. Why even try to do what the left and media wants if you’re going to be ripped apart for doing it? Might as well do what you want and what’s right since the howling will be the same either way.

Americans no longer share a common ideology.

The ideology of the Left is an invader. It is atheistic to its core and seeks to reduce everyone to poverty except the dictatorial government elite.

If folks haven't seen this video yet, they need to.

This guy nails Lewis to the wall.  He spreads the pain to the Democrat party as a whole too.  This is an exceptional video segment.

Apparent!y these dumb asses never took Civics 101.

The popular vote does not count for beans!

The Electoral Vote is whayt counts!

That’s the way it’s been for nearly 250 years!

Sometimes they do not correspond sometimes they do!.......

If you don’t grasp the need for the Electoral Vote, the popular vote ploy is more powerful. It’s a simple concept though.

California just had 4 million more votes for Clinton than Trump. That accounted for not only Clinton’s full numbers she beat Trump by in the popular vote, but she had 1 million votes left over.

If the roles were reversed, I doubt the Left would want one state to be able to force the nation to accept a candidate from the right, against the other 49 states.

The Electoral College worked out just the way it should have.

49 states made the choice, and California had to accept it, as it should.

To me, all these events were perfectly predictable. Basically, we are in a war. They will do their best to deny any legitimacy to Trump. It will go on. His legitimacy will be challenged again and again, even though it may take different forms.

I just hope that their blind rage will blind their judgment, becoming more radical, alienating more supporters and politically isolated. Things may look bad, but they also present opportunities in which Trump can easily outmaneuver them.

If not for the Electoral Vote, candidates would campaign in only four or five states.....

I agree with that. It’s pretty obvious.

First, it has been reversed. Each time the United States goes through a Presidential election, cries rise up to change or do away with the Electoral College. This movement fizzles out the further we get from the Presidential election. The Electoral College has had the most legislation submitted to Congress in order to change it. These bills always fail. I give no credence to their cries because in the end it would take a Constitutional Amendment to change the current structure and two-thirds majority of states would never ratify it. California has a better chance to secede from the Republic than to ratify an amendment on the Electoral College.

The media’s having a helluva tough time. “Republican President? Bash him!” “Republican President who bashes back? Where’s my safe space???”

Let them continue trying. Gives Trump more incentive to bulldoze the leftists’ agenda.

When people here in MA tell me their vote doesn’t count I tell them, don’t feel bad, you could live in CA.

I agree, but I don’t see California complaining.

It’s the Democrats in the East that seem to be making all the noise about the popular vote totals.

Some of them may be from California, but it certainly isn’t limited to them. The ‘rioters’ seem to be singing the same tune on this issue.

Well, none of our votes counted in 2008 and 2012.

That’s not entirely true, but as it relates to the president, that’s about it.

They will do this because if Trump’s numbers go down he’ll have little political capital to pass his agenda.

Sadly the GOP-e will be more than willing to go their own way and box Trump out to suit themselves.

They’re already doing it.

The Coloured people sure like "impo'ent" names to call themselves: "Icon," "Mogul" "Diva"

I have yet to see one article that did not refer to Lewis as an "icon."

I have lots of icon on my Smart phone. I don't recall seeing any of Lewis.
