France must exit Europe and the Eurozone, along with the other countries in the European south - Portugal, Italy, Spain, Greece, Cyprus - and Ireland, French far-right leader Marine Le Pen said in an interview due to be published in the Sunday edition of the Greek newspaper "Dimokratia".
"Frexit is a part of my policy," the head of France's National Front party said, adding that "ideally all these countries should leave on the same day as France and I will try to push in that direction."
People should have the opportunity to vote for their freedom from the slavery and blackmail imposed by the Brussels technocrats and to return to national sovereignty within their countries, Le Pen said. "The British understood this and voted to leave the European Union while, of course, they never replaced the pound with the euro," the French presidential candidate said.
"Wherever the euro went, there was an increase in prices, taxes and unemployment, a reduction of wages and pensions and citizens became poorer. In Britain, when the economic crisis started, they proceeded to devalue the pound and economic growth soon resumed," she pointed out.
Le Pen said her goals for the EU to become a "loose confederation of states with respect for national sovereignty" and she called for the outright abolition of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). "Wherever the IMF went, it asked for cuts in wages and pensions, higher taxes, privatisation of public utilities and caused an impoverishment of populations. The IMF prevents all growth," she said.
If elected president of France, Le Pen said that she would pull the country out of NATO since "it is not needed any more." She noted that NATO was founded to safeguard against the danger of the Warsaw Pact and the expansionism of the Communist Soviet Union, neither of which existed any more.
"Washington keeps NATO in existence to serve its goals in Europe," she added.
On Turkey, Le Pen said she did not agree with Turkey becoming a full member of the EU and that she supported a "special, privileged relationship with Turkey." She expressed opposition to policies that "promote and encourage the entrance of migrants into Europe, which cannot accept them."
"This tsunami of migrants must be contained. Europe is not able to give them work and opportunities to get rich. The migrants and illegal the minute they set foot on European soil because they have broken the law. They should be sent back to their countries," she said. Questioned about her party's relations with the Greek extreme-right party Golden Dawn, Le Pen said that "we neither have any nor want them."
Guess I’ll be votin’ “Oui!” for that then.
History in the making?
Language question — when speaking French, one would not actually use the word “exit” and so the neologism “Frexit” strikes me as something an English-speaking journalist would write. Does anyone know if the actual word “Frexit” is being used in France, or is there a more French way of expressing this concept when On est dans Paris?
I want a : UNEXIT...get us the heck out of the UN and Israel too...First cut funding them give them an exit timetable...that property on the River in NYC is worth a fortune ...throw the ungrateful sons of belial out...lol!
The French are very prone to picking up English words and Frenchifying them, much to the chagrin of the French language police and yes, they do have such a thing.
The global trend away from Globalism continues. Brexit, Trump, Le Pen ...
Yeah, I wondered if this was such a case. There is tremendous irony in having a movement in France which is seeking to promote French sovereignty and national identity but ends up using an frenchified English word to describe it. The language police must be shaking their heads.
It’s a very evocative neologism and I don’t blame them for coat-tailing their own movement onto it, as the sentiments are largely the same.
Ms. lePen is correct on the NATO issue. It WAS put together for a European defense force against The Warsaw Pact, and ultimately, the Soviet Union. Yes, there is ‘Russia’, but without ‘the Soviet buffer states’, including the once was East Germany, there has been no threat of expansion.
With the discussions coming from Brussels of an ‘EU Army’, I believe it is time for the US to divorce itself from any further NATO bankrolling, and making OUR weapons ‘NATO-compatible’. Brussels wants an ‘EU Army’, they can pay for that, themselves.
“Used to be that Europeans were shooting Europeans with 9mm projectiles, until Johnny Yank showed up with his 1911 loosing .45 caliber slugs making Europeans deader than the 9mm (.355) ever did!”
I wonder if they've ever borrowed one of the ~30% of English words that had been borrowed from French.
Now that would be irony.
LOL
“and she called for the outright abolition of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). “Wherever the IMF went, it asked for cuts in wages and pensions, higher taxes, privatisation of public utilities and caused an impoverishment of populations.”
I definitely go along with her argument about leaving the EU, but the IMF is not anywhere near the same thing. It’s not a body that holds countries to its whims. Countries can freely make their own decision as to whether they want to use the IMF. Nobody holds a gun to their heads.
They’ve run out of “Other People’s Money” which was the bedrock foundation of the European Union.
The trend started with Iceland.
‘Frexit’ - sounds like an acne medication. Anyway, I hope Le Pen succeeds in getting elected. The entire EU concept has turned into a menace to Western civilization at this point.
So I wonder what they would call Brussels exiting? Name’s been taken already.
What a classic greeting card! Farage is hilarious.
I wish I could believe there was some path for Le Pen to win but I can’t. The left will all support Fillon even though he’s the Republican candidate in order to deny Le Pen.
There is a pawnshop that puts on all kinds of gun topic YouTube shows. I watched one the other day on Caliber and they stated that from all gun reports with actual shootings the caliber that got 93% one shot drop power was the 357 magnum, thought it was interesting.
