Silly Carry Permit Requirements

Arizona – -(Ammoland.com)-Carry permits do not have to be expensive and complex. The New Hampshire permit has been fairly easy to obtain for many years, if you already had a permit from your state of residence.

During the last few months I have renewed a couple of carry permits.  It is not intensely difficult, but when you have better things to do, it can be irritating.

Some of the requirements make no sense. Others were obviously put in as poison pills during the passage of the original bill. Many seem designed to discourage people from obtaining a permit.

As John Lott has noted, the more expense, in time or money, or both, that it takes to obtain a permit, the smaller the percentage of people who will make the effort to obtain one.  It is not a straight slope.  The smaller the percentage of people become, the willingness to jump through hoops grows exponentially.  At the end of that scale are people who choose their career so that they can carry the means to protect themselves and their family.

Here are some silly requirements I have noted to obtain a carry permit.

Fingerprints. Silly. Not needed. Several states do not require them. An unnecessary expense and expenditure of time. Florida adds another $42 to “process finger prints”. May be it is a cash cow for them. Arizona recommends two fingerprint cards for their permit, doubling the printing expenditure on the applicant’s part.  For Arizona, it is a way to try to assure a good set of prints.  They only submit one copy, and one copy will (if it is legible) be enough for a permit.

Taking of fingerprints by the police.

When shall issue laws were passed, many compromises were made. Over time, incrementally, those silly requirements are being rolled back or eliminated altogether.

My fingerprints are protected under the 5th Amendment. On my own volition, I consent to those you request them of me.

Simple.

My understanding in my state, GA, is that he figerprints are used in the FBI background check process. Is this not the case?

We do fingerprint a lot. For instance, we fingerprint exotic dancers.

Fingerprinting is not required for a background check.

No fingerprints required to buy a firearm from a federal dealer.

Even in Illinois, fingerprints are optional.

Many states require them, unfortunately.

Oklahoma: Licensee may carry only one firearm at a time. Also a firearm may not be carried into a bar or the bar area of a restaurant, although a firearm may be carried into a restaurant that serves alcohol.

New Mexico: Generally very favorable towards gun owners and concealed carry, however carrying a firearm into any establishment that serves alcohol is a FELONY under state law, whether one is drinking or not.

Yikes...

Consider yourself lucky. Those of us who live in communist states like Maryland have virtually no hope of earning the right from the dictators to be able to exercise our rights under the Constitution.

We have to prove the “Need” to carry.

Sadly, our Republican Governor is a good guy, but just a bit too RINO to make this part of his legislative agenda.

The Congress in Maryland is called the General Assembly, or General Asylum. The Democrat President of the Senate has held that position since 1987. The Speaker of the House since 2003. Nobody uses an extra sheet of toilet paper without the express permission of these two liberal clowns.

So, if y’all need to get a set of fingerprints to get a permit, cue the crying girl GIF. Sorry, got no real sympathy.

And it’s amazing how many Marylanders outside the populous liberal enclaves own guns and are truly conservative.

“I would prefer to print other parts of their anatomy.”

I think they tried that, but they just kept finding your prints everywhere!

How appros that you should use NH as an example. I just renewed mine and youre completely correct in saying the silly requirements are roadblocks to discourage and time to complete the hoops would be better spent on other things. I had to give 3 references...again. Why? My town doesnt even contacted them. Next, under the ‘Why do you want a concealed carry permit’ question I wasnt simply allowed to state ‘For all lawful purposes’ as in the past. I HAD to give an enumerated list: hunting, self defense and target shooting which are all state sanctioned uses for CCW. Why ‘all lawful purposes’ wasnt OK is anyones guess. The salt in this wound is that the NH legislature has twice presented a Consituton Carry law to the governor which has been vetoed. Why? It remains to be seen if the new governor, a RINO, will maintian status quo. In any event ME has had Consitutional Carry for at least a year now and none of the left’s predicted genocide has materialized. Its well beyond time for NH to restore lost freedoms and stop to permit silliness. Its only useful for those regressive PDs who try to find any reason to disqualify applicants.

Easy solution:

Pass that the same RKBA (a true Right) ‘requirements’ be applied to voting a/o abortion (hell, welfare, student loans, etc. too!).

Judges would therefore have to strike it ALL down or allow the same.

Don’t know. I’m on my 4th Georgia permit. Last two times for renewals it was just a license fee and they ran the background check at the Probate Court. They already had the fingerprints from before. Cost $30 to renew on the spot.

As I think about it more, I don’t think so because you can go to a gun shop and fill out a form 4473 and they’ll call in the NICS check and you can get approved right there if they’re not busy. No fingerprints in this case.

Personally, I think it’s just the FBI growing their fingerprint data base.

Here in IL:

16 hours of training. (8 if you’re military or LE) at a cost of $150-$300 depending.
Fingerprints are optional at $65. It expedites the issuance supposedly.
FOID card at $20.

Then you wait 60-120 days.

In Chicago there’s an additional “class” at $125 I believe.

It’s ridiculous.

Police Officer: "I'm sorry ma'am...your printing."

Woman: "Whaaaa?!"

If CCW reciprocity is signed into law, I see a LOT (If not all) of people in Illinois wanting to carry going for their permits in other states.

Alabama: you gotta gun? Okay, here’s your permit. Seriously, NCIC check, print card, you’re in and out in about 15 minutes. Oh, you’re a military veteran? $20 fee is waived. Going to buy a new gun and have a concealed weapons permit? Here’s your gun, no background check necessary.

The prints would need to be stored in a biohazard bag.
