Former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) said in a new interview that Donald Trump has taken a different tone as president-elect and may be leaving behind his campaign promise to drain the swamp.
Gingrich told NPR's "Morning Edition" that he was told Trump now says [the phrase] was cute, but he doesnt want to use it anymore.
Gingrich, who has been a close adviser to Trump, said he likes "drain the swamp" because it vividly illustrates the problem, because all people in this city who are the alligators are going to hate the swamp being drained.
But, you know, he is my leader, and if he decides to drop the swamp and the alligator I will drop the swamp and the alligator, he said.
Gingrich also said hed noticed Trumps change in attitude toward his supporters chanting lock her up at his post-election rallies, referring to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
Maybe he feels that, as president, as the next president of the United States, that he should be marginally more dignified than talking about alligators in swamps, Gingrich said.

A. I don’t care what Gingrich says unless and until he is Official Spokesman for Trump.
B. The Hill, like ALL MSM outfits, hates Trump and lies, makes up crap, twists statements, takes them out of context, etcetcetc.
C. If Trump doesn’t use the phrases “Drain the Swamp” or “locker her up” any more and just does the work that those phrases mean, that is just fine with me.
D. People need to unknot their undies.
For all the positives Newt can bring, he annoys the hell out of people with his need for attention and undermining comments as here.

Right. Newt has an unfortunate proclivity to run his mouth when his brain is in neutral.
I’m good with him no longer using the phrase “Drain the Swamp.”
I much prefer “Flush the Crapper” anyways.
You got that right. I like Newt, but this is not helpful.
You really still think Hillary is getting locked up?
Look man, I lived through the Reagan years, a bitter disappointment. Actions speak louder than words. Let’s take this conversation up, say, a year from Inauguration Day. I’ve seen it all before. I admire your optimism, and ask you to respect my age and cynicism. I soooo hope your right. A year from now, I pray that you can rub my nose in it. I hope Trump kicks their asses and overthrows the whole corrupt, evil system. I’m very happy you’re one of the Good Guys. Best wishes for a blessed and joyous Christmas Season....Huckfillary
“For all the positives Newt can bring, he annoys the hell out of people with his need for attention and undermining comments as here.”
I respect Newt for telling it as it is. I don’t feel he wants to undermine the PEOTUS.
I do think he is wisely trying to remind the PEOTUS that he made promises and he needs to stick to them.
I, personally, have been furious ever since on election night he said we owe a debt of gratitude to HRC. Now, he chastises his supporters when they echo back to him what he said the entire time he was campaigning and says they are hostile.
We’ll see. As for now, I feel Newt was dead on calling him out.
Someone needs to superglue a sock in Gingrich’s mouth.
I think Jeff Sessions will be on the case. Not sure if it will result in her being locked up, but I don’t think Hillary’s end of the swamp has begun to drain yet.
Newt, wouldn’t you have been wise to say something like....PEOTUS Trump is committed to looking at the massive federal government in detail and to then work on removing redundant, inefficient and top-heavy agencies and/or personnel. He is interested in federal employees having the best training available so they can perform at top level. Those unwilling to do that will have to find employment elsewhere....etc.
This would put swampdwellers on notice without calling them such...but instead Newt has given a soundbite making Trump appear to backtrack, which he’s not doing.
The Sooner Trump distances himself from Gingrich the sooner he will be better off.
Sounds to me more like the phrase is what Trump doesn’t want to use, but will still clear out the corruption in DC. I take it more as a change in messaging, not that he’s abandoning the plan.
It is unbelievable to me, how many people on our side will just swallow any anti-Trump bait thrown out there. Personally I think what Newt did was a little strategic deception and a little trolling and it would not be a surprise to me if the Trump communications people coordinated it all. Trump is so strategic, one must always see what he does in a tactical and/or strategic context. I am convinced of one thing, more of our people, those whom I refer to as the Nervous Nellies, need to read Sun Tzu’s The Art Of War and Trump’s The Art Of The Deal. Read those two books and understand them, and one can understand exactly what Trump and his people are doing. I think Trump sees his strategic plans much the same way as Churchill saw the truth in wartime. Churchill said, “The truth is so valuable that it must be protected by a bodyguard of lies”. I think Trump sees his plans the same way.
Dude, are you really this blind? Stop being emotional and start thinking instead of feeling. Newt is doing exactly what Trump wants him to do. He is providing tactical and strategic deception and he is sending out conflicting signals to the press, the dems and the anti-Trump R’s. He knows they’re his enemies and he is going to try to hide everything he can from them for as long as he can and hopefully Newt and others can send them down some incorrect paths. This is called playing politics. We do not want Trump giving out his actual game plan so our enemies can mount defenses against, or do you? If you don’t then let Trumps people play the strategic game and don’t demand purist messaging.
There are several reasons Neuter didn’t get the job. His smartest man in the room attitude is just one of them.
Not made and broken by Trump. By many other R’s over the years for sure, but I for one do not think it wise to judge Trump by career politicians. Trump has made a solemn promise to the American people who supported him, I think he’s going to do his best to do everything he promised. Will he be able to accomplish everything, probably not due to the political nature of anything and because some R’s will be working behind the scenes to destroy him. In short I do not think you need to apply your well honed political cynicism to Trump like you and I both do when dealing with career pols. Trump is different.
I don’t know all the factors playing into this but I do remember Trump saying at a rally near the end of the campaign that he didn’t much like the phrase much but that it drove the crowds wild which is why they left it in.
You are 100% correct. Trump is the all time media manipulator, it is the reason he can run circles around the dems and the press.
Newt did this at the behest of Trumps people. Its so obvious if one has been studying and paying attention to Trumps books and the campaign operations from the election, and I mean Sooooooooo obvious.
