The taxpayer-funded University of Kentucky has punished a journalism professor for sexual misconduct because, the professors says, he publicly sang "California Girls" by The Beach Boys.
The professor, Buck Ryan, told his bizarre story of bureaucratic woe in an op-ed in the Lexington Herald-Leader this weekend.
The University of Kentuckys Title IX coordinator - Patty Bender, according to the public school's website - ruled that Ryans crooning of "California Girls" was sexual misconduct because the song includes "language of a sexual nature," Ryan writes.
The occasion which caused Ryan to belt out the 1965 Beach Boys song was the closing ceremony of an education program in China co-sponsored by the University of Kentucky and China's Jilin University. Ryan had taught a class for the program called "Storytelling: Exploring China's Art and Culture."
During the closing ceremony, Ryan says, he sang his own version of "California Girls" to portray "the many differences in Chinese and American culture."

Dick Clark and Ed Sullivan should also be ashamed of themselves for helping to further sexism.
Should have stuck with the Beach Boys cover of Charlie Manson’s song

A Nazi bitch right there.
“Patty Bender”? Good grief. Isn’t that highly sexual? Much dirtier than the Beach Boys song, IMHO.
There are serious violations of civil rights here including Due Process and free speech. This crap is just about to end. BIG TIME!!
Didn’t like the band at all. Too weenie wimpy. But oh those cars!
LOL, reminds me of the term, Banana Bender.
State employed bureaucrats who attempt to enforce “speech codes” or punish people who are exercising their constitutional rights must be held accountable and punished severely. They must be hounded legally and personally held accountable d=for financial damages. Only when the liberals are forced to howl in pain will this nonsense stop.
When in grad school in the 70’s, some friends and I sang Chalkin’ and a Huggin’ at a school sponsored talent show. That song is about a girl who is so fat that, to avoid becoming lost in her vast wasteland while hugging her, you have to mark her with chalk. Then we were just hissed off the stage (which was our goal in singing the song). How might we fare today?
I want the car closest to the camera. Nice engine work.
Since they did not include what those were they could have been anything from dreadfully obscene to only slightly suggestive.
Very complicated story, with a Beach Boys song the least of the issues. The main claim is that he acted inappropriately with two students. The culprit is making it a story about “California Girls”. From the article, it’s hard to tell whether that he really was consorting with students in an inappropriate way.
You’d likely be expelled. But audience disapproval is the optimal response.
Right. “California Girls” should be renamed “Things from an Indeterminate Location”, so as not to offend anyone.
327?
Just googled and saw this headline:
“At University of Kentucky, about 40 percent of harassment investigations end in firing”
East Germany wasn’t that efficient.
