(CNSNews.com) Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) held a forum Tuesday on the future of the Electoral College, which he claimed was rooted in slavery.
We also must face up to the cold reality that the Electoral College is rooted in slavery, Conyers said in his opening statement.
Conyers referenced a claim by one of the witnesses, Yale Law professor Akhil Amar, that states opposed direct elections for the president, because in a direct election system, the North would outnumber the South, whose many slaves could not vote, but the Electoral College instead let each southern state count its slaves, although with a two-fifths discount, they counted for three-fifths of a person in computing its share of the overall count.

Yes. Pretty much all of them.
These communists are actually advocating the ignoring of democracy and we are just ruled by the whim of 525 electors. Why have the damned election? Just pay the most money to the elector and get their vote!!
Everything is ‘rooted in slavery’ with this bunch: Air, water and Dirt.................
Yes yes... And vagina is the new black because voting against Hillary was racist.
He’s thinking of the 3/5 rule, which is no longer in effect. Fail!
I think maybe John Conyers brain is rooted in his butt.... Perhaps he should remove his head from his anus.....
And the income tax...
He’s full of baloney. The electoral college was so that small states like Connecticut and Rhode Island wouldn’t get swamped by the larger southern states. I.e. free states wanted to be able to prevent slave states from dominating. Hence the “Connecticut Compromise of counting slaves as 3/5ths of a person for census purposes, so the south wouldn’t get apportioned a large number of congressmen based on slaves who have no rights, but would ensure that the south could protect slavery forever by dominating the congress.
I haven't read the details of the article (it takes so long), but I'm suspecting Conyers is right.
Surely he is talking about the owner-slave arrangement between the Dem Party and the black folks of this country. The Electoral College System is perfectly suited for ending that relationship since it allows people like Donald Trump to be elected rather than some Plantation Owner Wannabe like Hillary.
I'll read the article later just to see if I was right. But I'm sure he meant to say "The End of Slavery" not just "Slavery".
These people are a cross between a clown and a cockroach.
In his feeble brain, the fact that they tried to prevent states from benefiting politically from slavery means the safety measures put in place were “rooted in slavery”.
Well it’s supposed to be since the White House was built partly by slaves you have to be rooted in slavery to get there. /sarc
No, it seems he thinks states where slavery is legal should have gotten bonus votes so they could have made slavery permanent, I guess.
Yes, most who whine about it, have it exactly backwards. But if you try to explain that to them they get upset.
Democrats created slaves, the KKK,Jim crow laws annnnnd yet, blacks like Conyers keep voting for a racist party that annihilated more blacks than republicans....
Will that Demonicrat ever run out of race cards to throw around?!?
So’s sweet potato pie. Don’t mess with either one. I’m fond of both.
There are no longer any slaves. There is no longer a 3/5’s rule. Representatives are assigned based on population of a state regardless of race. Senators are still two per state. Electors are equal in number to the number of Representatives and Senators. Where’s the racism????
So, this low IQ dumbaSS Conyers thinks he know better than the founding Fathers?
Yeah, let a bunch of liberals in Los Angeles and New York, and millions of illegal aliens, determine the presidential election.
There are 3,141 counties in America. Trump won 3,084 of them. Pickles Clinton won 57 counties.
What, according to Conyers, is NOT rooted in slavery?
