The Ted Cruz campaign may have played a key role in handing Donald Trump the White House, an on the record discussion between key political operatives Thursday revealed.
Cruzs campaign manager, Jeff Roe, warned the Trump campaign ahead of the New Hampshire primary that support for him was dropping in their internal polls, giving Trump a chance to recalibrate his strategy in the key primary state. He went on to win New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina, essentially locking up the Republican nomination.
Corey Lewandowski, then Trumps campaign manager, recalled the phone call at an election post-mortem hosted by Harvard University. Roe called him following Trumps loss in the Iowa caucuses to tell him internal Cruz polling showed Trump was losing support in New Hampshire, because he spent too much time attacking other candidates.
The Trump campaign was not conducting internal polls of its own at the time, Lewandowski said, so the phone call provided crucial insight going into the New Hampshire primary, allowing them to adjust their strategy. A loss in New Hampshire could have proved a death blow to the Trump campaign.
Roe confirmed Lewandowskis account, saying at that point in the campaign the Cruz campaign needed Trump to defeat the other Republican candidates.
The account was part of a larger discussion of the failure of other Republican candidates to take Trump down in the primaries, perhaps because they didnt take him seriously enough.

Inside Baseball gibberish. Hey. it’s Friday!
Trump didn't win; Ted Cruz's people let Trump win.
OOPS...LOL
they thought, and continue to think that Trump is such a simpleton. No matter how much he wins, clobbers them, humiliates them, they will not leave their narrative and that is why they lost.
Ted Cruz is still ineligible.
Much will be written about this campaign. For my money Megyn Kelly’s debate ambush question helped the Trump campaign enormously.
“Inside Baseball gibberish. Hey. its Friday!”
And the sun’s already up!
I still think Mr Trump would have won, just would have taken longer in the primary season to clinch the deal...Cruz was losing really bad in the end
Not attacking all the other candidates at once may have been a winning strategy for Trump, but maybe it was more the logic of the campaign that determined Trump's attitude towards Cruz, not anything Cruz said or did: Ted Cruz wasn't going to win New Hampshire (or Florida), so Trump could concentrate his fire on other contenders.
The account was part of a larger discussion of the failure of other Republican candidates to take Trump down in the primaries, perhaps because they didnt take him seriously enough. The post-mortem was atypically hostile, with Trump aides basking in their win and accusing the Clinton camp of being sore losers, while Clinton aides decried an election they said was won because of a resurgence of white supremacy.
That sounds like a very biased account. Did the Trump aides come in "basking in their win" and "accusing the Clinton camp of being sore losers"? Or did the Clinton aides acting like sore losers to begin with simply produce a response in the Trump team?
In my small NH town Trump got 192 votes, Cruz 94, about 50 also runs.
Before the election Trump had a rally in the town down from me and had a huge turn out, unheard of. I voted for Cruz until he stepped on his dick, he lost me after that.
It was GOD’S Providence that TRUMP won.
And Jeff Roe is still the stuff you scraped off your shoe the last time you mowed.
Like Hillary!, Trump beat Cruz like a bass drum.
Yeah, yeah, that one phone call turned the whole thing around. Otherwise, Trump never would have noticed that all the liar polls were dropping!
I’ve got two words for you. Glenn Beck.
Just like Roe needed CNN to help them take out Ben Carson.
The election wasn't a total loss. At least Cruz beat his wife.
Right it was Roe’s comment on a phone call, not his screw up in Iowa with Ben Carson that did all the damage
His staff, other people’s staff, the Moon was in the exact right phase, Kelly Ann, the media...
I’d say I’ve just about heard it all, but I’m sure there are more morons ready to speak.
Trump won, because he executed a fantastic vision and leadership.
While we’re at it, which group of voters won it for Trump.
Each individual one. End of story...
Every individual who got off their ass and voted, they each won it for Trump.
Luckily the last time I mowed it got stuck on the wheel of the lawn mower, much easier to clean off.
