The Kremlin said on Wednesday that Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's statement that his forces in Syria were there to topple President Bashar al-Assad had come as a surprise to Moscow and that it expected an explanation from Ankara.
In a speech on Tuesday, Erdogan said: "We are there to bring justice. We are there to end the rule of the cruel Assad, who has been spreading state terror," Erdogan said.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on a conference call: "It is a very serious statement and one which differs from previous ones [...] We hope that our Turkish partners will provide us with some kind of explanation about this."

Ooops Erdogan let the cat out of the bag.
Israel isn’t commenting but Syria says there was an air attack on its territory from Israeli planes firing from Lebanese air space in recent hours.
Both countries don’t like Assad with Israel’s motive being the Iranian connection-Hezbollah.
Israel has said its military actions in Syria are about keeping Hezbollah from getting any weapons like chemical ones that could threaten Israel.
The highly speculative Israeli propaganda-disinformation “Debka” site said this in a story published in recent hours.
“If the Arab media reporting on Israeli air attacks on Syrian military and Hezbollah targets in Damascus from Lebanese air space are confirmed, Jerusalem will be shown to have followed Ankara in backing away from those short-lived understandings, opting instead for an independent policy in its own security interests with regard to Syria.”
Kinda waiting for that. And of course, Obama and Erdogen are BFF. So is this Obama playing games again....sending arms and soldiers to Turkey?? And Turkey will re-route them to Syria??
Erdogan still hopes to make Syria a part of a Turkish dominated Sunni caliphate. The Saudis will support anything that will be a strong barrier to the Shi’ite threat The problem is that neither the Turks, the Saudis or the Americans can control the barbaric Wahhabi inspired Sunni jihadists. Russia will never allow nearby Syria to devolve into a jihadist state. The terrorists who cause havoc in southern Russia and even have struck Moscow would then have a secure base. If Erdogan is serious, he will soon be in a confrontation with Moscow. Doubt he can count on “NATO” or US support in his quest to reestablish a caliphate.
Do I detect some anti-Semitism in your remarks?
Genesis 12:2-3New King James Version (NKJV)
2 I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you
And make your name great;
And you shall be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.
They’re not just asking...
Turkey has been after the kurds (and still is), who have been trying to carve up a state for themselves. They live in Northern Syria and Southern Turkey as well as in Northern Iraq. While the USA regards the kurds as allies. Now Erdogan seems to want something more.
You must be kidding.
Where was his post ‘antisemitic’?
Or do you throw this term around like lefties love to call everything ‘racist’?
For the record: DEBKA is a notoriously unreliable, speculative source pushing Israeli views. The Israeli owners admit the latter.
And keep the Bible verses to yourself. The state of Israel is doing plenty of naughty business that harms US security interests.
It would be nice to see a Christian Byzantium again.
I highly encourage all Americans to refer to the refer to the city on the Bosphorus occupied by the Turks by its true name. It drives Turks nuts.
It was Glenn Beck who said a few years ago, that he supports Israel, but not the supporters of Israel.
Israel is a human institution, with human frailties.
I read Ben Gurion’s memoirs this year and was reminded of that.
I am as much of a Christian Zionist as Orde Wingate and others.
But Israel’s Lobby and leaders have pursued a policy for survival that involves creating a messy situation in the region.
They say its to stop Iran and I have to accept that, although not agree with all details like Syria’s Civil War which led to IS.
Others were involved like Saudis, Qataris but yes the supporters of Israel are in the mix.
God has a great plan for Jewish people in spite of their human-humanistic institutions like government and lobbyists.
Yes, I think that's more plausible. Erdogan dislikes the Kurds and feels threatened by them more by than Assad - it's almost pathological.
* more than by Assad.
There is not much being reported in the news on this issue. Since Turkey is a member of NATO, and Putin has taken a hard line against interference by the West, is there a danger of this becoming a flashpoint. Could NATO be dragged into war with Russia by the Turks?
I haven’t found any updates on the situation.
Well, the Su-24 incident hasn't ignited a war, though it was a classic situation when a war breaks out. Moreover, Russia's main supply route (still not the only possible) is via the Turkish straits. I think, these facts are a good reason for Russia to be cautious. As for Turkey, Russia is one of the largest customers of its beach resorts and vegetable farms. Erdogan seems to have needed a reminder of this, which has been the Russian visa and food import sanctions.
So, a Russia-NATO war is unlikely.
Thanks for the additional scenario factors. The situation over there is very worrisome.
