A top advisor to Donald Trump on tech policy matters proposed all but abolishing the nation's telecom regulator last month, foreshadowing possible moves by the president-elect to sharply reduce the Federal Communications Commission's role as a consumer protection watchdog.
In an Oct. 21 blog post, Mark Jamison, who on Monday was named one of two members of Trump's tech policy transition team, laid out his ideal vision for the government's role in telecommunications, concluding there is little need for the agency to exist.
"Most of the original motivations for having an FCC have gone away," Jamison wrote. "Telecommunications network providers and [Internet service providers] are rarely, if ever, monopolies."
The FCC declined to comment for this story, but its current leadership has disagreed strongly with that analysis. Its Democratic chairman, Tom Wheeler, has spoken of an Internet service "duopoly" in much of the country that limits competition. And he has compared telecommunications to the rail and telegraph networks of the 19th century, calling for new rules of the road as the Internet becomes the dominant communications platform of the 21st century.

Soon, the entire world will be fiber end-to-end. Any RF usage will be minimal. We’re almost there now.
The history of communications show that sooner or later, whatever regulatory agency is involved will try and regulate speech/content. Such is the nature of man and government
Pope Leo X tried to stop publication of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses.
“Copyright” was originally an attempt to regulate who could own and operate a printing press.
What do you think this latest push regarding “fake news” is?
Free Speech has ALWAYS had to fight to remain free.
>> that would be interesting in regards to amateur radio <<
Yes. If this policy should be carried to its logical conclusion, hams would end up having to pay for their frequencies. Bad for hams, but probably good for everybody else.
If you read back through my comments they deal mainly with the functions for which I think the FCC or similar function are necessary. I’ve also stated here that the politics of its function has to be removed.
When you say “I’m wrong,” at least get the facts straight.
I disagree OM. Hams have been self-regulating for decades and its only after the current lawyer-dominated FCC took over that things went downhill. We DO need the Enforcement Division! But staffed with guys like Riley, not some bimbo fresh out of law school looking to get her ticket punched and on to the next gummint job. We darn near lost the HF bands due to BPL, which was politically pushed by FCC. The same dolts who forced “HD radio”onto the market with just one crony outfit controlling the technology, and on and on.
CB? You know, with bigger fish to fry I’d open it up as a “free radio” band and let ‘er rip, let ‘em play music, broadcast, work skip, whatever. Then enforce the hell out of part 97 on the ham bands. If the miscreants would congregate there instead of 75 meters it would do everyone a big favor, and could be entertaining now that there’s not much to listen to on shortwave.
You tell me when they run a fiber directly into your home. And will you have a mega reel of fiber connected to your cell phone and that cell tower, You don't know what you're talking about.
Federal regulation of Internet coming, warn FCC, FEC commissioners
Ok so you support unelected government democrat(communists) censoring the Internet. Im saying the FCC must be abolished because I know the FCC will try to censor the Internet as the article below proves. . But I hope Trump becomes aware of this

Totally wrong. Fiber will be the backbone but millions of new endpoint will all be wireless. Don’t doubt me.
The FCC should only be involved in RF communications, the disruption of which can be dangerous. Cable and Internet do not “broadcast” in the traditional sense of the word, and should no more come under the control of the FCC than a newspaper.
Big bank of florescent grow lights?
No. You go back to your statement that the RF spectrum will end up being disused - that’s just foolish. You’re wandering off to crap that I’ve got no problem in abolishing and avoiding that.
You still don’t know what you’re talking about.
Further, you apparently still can’t read. I’ve said repeatedly that stuff you’re throwing up to me (basically, censorship and politics) are what I’ve said all along here that need to be removed. Keep the parts that are necessary and get rid of the rest.
As a matter of fact, there is fiber on the pole right outside my house, connected to my modem via 75 ohm coax. Delivering 100 MBPS all day, every day.
Cell phones are a different animal, and do use RF.
And yes, I do know what I’m talking about regarding the history of governments attempting to control the free flow of thought and information.
And prove to me that this “link” is all fiber all the way. You can’t. And you still don’t know what you are talking about.
What frequency does The FCC broadcast on?
Try reading this first before you say that the FCC doesn’t need abolishing

Add spectrum management to that list and this would be good. No “fair doctrine” PC crap. However this is not where I would have begun with govt reductions. There are many agencies that I would put higher on the cut list. Pretty much anything that does not play a role in national security.
>> Markets sort this kind of thing out quickly <<
Markets won’t work well in the absence of well-defined and enforceable property rights. But it’s virtually impossible to imagine how property rights could be assigned and enforced for amateur radio. I doubt that even the late Ronald Coase could have come up with a viable solution.
Therefore, I submit that a 100% market-based approach to allocation of the RF spectrum would probably doom amateur radio to the dustbin of history. That may be a good thing, or it may be a bad thing. We report, you decide.
You’re just repeating pathetic posts that don’t address my comments on this thread. I started with the RF spectrum and Congress’ law to address it in the CA of 1934 and all of a sudden, the RF spectrum will be disused and we have to the worry about the frigging internet. Yes, I agree, the government’s manipulation of the internet is not necessary and should be severely crippled if not abolished.
But that still does not negate the legitimate need for some RF deconfliction and control. You and devolve down to crap diversions but the fact remains you’ve (and others) said some things that are just patently foolish.
Whatever. But the FCC is still gonna have its guts ripped out, and it is LONG overdue. Their ruling that the internet is a utility opens the door to censorship.
Back in 1907, “Universal Service” was what allowed government control of phone service.
Government, power, and how they work has never changed since the dawn of mankind. And they never will.

Government agencies are all becoming politicized and weaponize against the American people, against freedom and against America the IRS, FCC, EPA, NASA , none were doing the stupid unconstitutional original reasons they were supposedly set up for. Billions of dollars annually are taken at the point of a gun to give billions yearly in budgets to these tyrannical agencies to further opress us . Is that America, is that in the Constitution? .
Where in the Constitution is any of these monstrosities authorized? Go ahead name it. Maybe you should move to Venezuela, that's were your tolerance for these government agencies as in the FCC censoring the Internet, IRS oppressing conservatives and so on leads to. Read this and the Constitution and get a clue.
Abolish the FCC and investigate these bureaucratic tyrants
“I realize it’s a funding & enforcement issue -— but for eight years?!”
Tell them you hear white supremacist dog whistles encoded in the noise and it keeps you from hearing the LGBT rights broadcast. They’ll be out there tomorrow.
