Markets won’t work well in the absence of well-defined and enforceable property rights. But it’s virtually impossible to imagine how property rights could be assigned and enforced for amateur radio. I doubt that even the late Ronald Coase could have come up with a viable solution.

Therefore, I submit that a 100% market-based approach to allocation of the RF spectrum would probably doom amateur radio to the dustbin of history. That may be a good thing, or it may be a bad thing. We report, you decide.

Like I say, Coase notwithstanding, property rights are figured out very quickly in free markets. Ask the 49ers.
