With Silicon Valley CEOs terrified that President Donald Trump will retaliate against offshoring production, Apple is already preparing to move iPhone production back to America. The Nikkei Asian Review reported:
Apple asked both Foxconn and Pegatron Corp., the two iPhone assemblers, in June to look into making iPhones in the U.S., a source said. Foxconn complied, while Pegatron declined to formulate such a plan due to cost concerns.
As Breitbart News reported, candidate Donald Trump, while speaking at Liberty University in January, said, Were going to get Apple Computer to build their damn computers and things in this country, instead of in other countries. He added, We gotta bring back the jobs from China, we gotta bring back the jobs from Japan, and all these countries that are ripping us off. And were gonna do that. And we are gonna do that.
In March, Trump went after manufacturers who relocate production to China, where Apples assemblers churn out iPhones, iPads and MacBooks. How does it help us when they make it in China?
Already referred to as the Valley of the Democrats for the over 83 percent of Silicon Valley tech CEO and employee donations that went to Democrats in the 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns, Trumps populist comments caused Silicon Valley corporate CEOs to double down on electing a Democrats, with over 99 percent of Silicon Valleys $8.6 million in contributions in the presidential primaries going to Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

I LOVE WINNING!
Researching possibilities does not a done deal make.
After devices are being found with spyware secretly installed in factories in China, I think there is more incentive to build them here.
Certainly this customer would prefer American made.
WONDERFUL if even a portion of Apple’s massive foreign production can be moved back to USA!
GO TRUMP!
Im sure he will keep pushing for what’s possible to get some jobs back for American workers1
Exactly.
Who is the Obama list guy on FR?
Nachum (so?)??
We need a list of WINNING.
Welp considering they are not his supporters I think it would be in their best interest to move at least SOME of the production here in the US instead of China.
I agree.
Trump said we’d get sick of winning - how’s everyone holding up?
Will they sell at the same price?
Considering the profit Apple has been reporting off the iPhone sales, one would imagine that profit would be cut into pretty dramatically.
That said, JUST being able to repatriate their overseas funds at a lower rate would entirely pay for many of the new factories as well as give a cushion to prevent increases in retail price.
I would have settled for 2000, but this is feeling like 1980.
I think it takes about 1 man-hour to build an iPhone. They will be either the same price or just slightly higher.
“Trump said wed get sick of winning - hows everyone holding up?”
Please, Sir? May I have some more? ;)
First, the build cost of a iPhone is probably very small compared to the sell price. Then the labor is probably a small factor in the build cost. And even then, companies are learning that manufacturing onshore doesn’t carry the cost penalty it appears to on the surface. Lots of hidden or unexpected costs to make stuff over there, plus more strenuous quality control needed.
Okay. All you supply chain experts convinced me. I suppose it is also helpful that once they are built, they are already here.
