Donald Trump, the first New York City kid to become president since FDR, will also be the first commander-in-chief to move to the White House from an apartment. True, his 30,000-square-foot, gilt-slathered Trump Tower penthouse is no ordinary pad, but the fact that he lives in the innermost heart of what you might call the inner city means that security arrangements dont just inconvenience a few neighbors; they screw up a sizable chunk of Manhattan. Fifth Avenue in the 50s is almost always clotted with pedestrians and cars, and this time of year it becomes even more congested as department stores turn their windows into Christmas Barneys-, Saks-, and Dior-amas. But Trumps election has turned his stretch of Fifth into the urban equivalent of the security line at JFK: Aluminum barriers squeeze traffic into a pair of lanes, sidewalks are blocked off, and pedestrians shuffle past a gauntlet of armed officers.
The city can cope with this disruption for a while. We grumble when world leaders converge on the United Nations twice a year, paralyzing the East Side, but we also recognize that statespeople need their New York fix, too. We know the excitement and irritation of moving aside for the 13-car motorcade ferrying President Obama to dinner at Cosme. But when the president-elect lets it be know that over the next four years hed like to slip back to his Tower on weekends (because, really, who wants to spend a Saturday afternoon in downtown D.C.?), that will be not a mere annoyance but a state-sponsored takeover of public space.

Liberal butt-hurt continues.
Davidson. Have you ever stopped to realize that all that gold and glitter just might NOT be gilt?
They can go around another way, like ordinary human beings.
So you have to show your ID to get to your apartment. Big Whoop.
You are probably in the of the most secure places in the US right now.
Thank God the last President never gridlocked entire urban areas for vanity trips.
Having driven through it I can say that Chappaqua is quite nice and it's just a five minute flight from Manhattan.
Would you blame ANYONE for being "safe than sorry" for the time being?
#fight
they have shut down part of Fifth Avenue during the holiday shopping season. It’s a big deal.
If the concern is car bombs, then Pedestrianize a couple blocks of Fifth north and south of Trump Tower. This is already done a half dozen times every year already.
good for tourists
good for the President
and only bad for Pakistani Cabbies
Standing by for story on Obama’s new house in DC causing mayhem
I will say I do sympathize with the business owners who are effected. It is likely hurting their revenue
IMHO: I would feel better with him at Trump Towers than in ‘sewer city’...who knows what ‘bugs’ are planted in the White House, the V.P. digs; anywhere they go, nope I say keep the White House for tours for the people, it is their home anyway...
I think Trump can govern from Trump Towers and let the V.P. stay in a different home in Washington D.C. that way they are away from each other, but in constant contact with everyone they need to be communicating with...it’s a helicopter ride from the Top of Trump Towers to Washington D.C. anyway...
Trump has said he isn’t going to be going on any vacations, and I think he feels a lot safer in New York, it really doesn’t matter where the President is, he is still the President...
As far as that section of New York, look at how safer it would be for the citizens and businesses there, and if it hurts the ‘butt hurt’ mayor so be it...leave, they don’t like you anyway...
The rioters/looters/protesters hardly ever pay for a coffee and danish, anymore.
And Clinton held up an airport for a haircut - funny how these folks are so concerned about the rich folks living in Trump accommodations - the spit hasn’t even dried off them yet.....
Calling Trump’s penthouse and ‘apartment’ is like calling an aircraft carrier a dingy.............
...and Pakistani car bombers............
I’ve been walking past Trump Tower every day since the election. The inconvenience is greatly exaggerated. Also, the residents of Trump Tower are now living in probably the safest private building in the entire world!
It may look nice, but I understand that some of the neighbors are sketchy and under FBI investigation.
