KISSIMMEE, Fla. A dozen Canadian women are heading to Florida on a mission unrelated to sun, surf and sand they intend to help Hillary Clinton defeat Donald Trump.
Theyre bunking in a pair of houses that will serve as temporary campaign dorms for the travelling Canucks, as they knock on doors and make calls in whats arguably the most important region of the most important swing state in the U.S. election.
We didnt come here to have a holiday were here to work, said Cheryl Conley-Strange.
Its a lot of work.
She knows from experience. The Winnipeg woman has worked every federal Liberal campaign since 1979, when she was a poll captain for future foreign minister Lloyd Axworthy. Shed intended to retire from organizational work after the federal election, satisfied with the state of her party.
But she figured she had one more campaign in her.
Conley-Strange chatted with Manitoba friends about helping political allies in the U.S.: I started saying to them, Hey, why dont we go down to the States and help (the Democrats)? To be neighbourly to help people who feel the same way we do (about issues).
She suggested staying at her familys winter home in central Florida. So many people took her up on the idea that they wound up getting a second place in the same Kissimmee neighbourhood. Shed bought in that location a few years ago she liked the proximity to Disneyworld.
It also happened to be on rich electoral soil.
She only realized recently that Central Florida is considered the swing region of the biggest swing state. its sandwiched between Floridas solidly Republican north and solidly Democratic south. And it has tens of thousands of new available votes.
An influx of Puerto Ricans is having a ripple-effect on the politics in this area, and therefore on the country.
These new residents are eligible to vote immediately, as Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens. They tend to be more liberal than the states Cuban voters. And their ranks are growing to rival the Cubans.
A group that works to register Latino voters has three offices in the state and none are in the metropolis of Miami to the south. Theyre all here in central Florida, in Kissimmee, Orlando and Tampa.
This is where the electoral action is, says Esteban Garces, the state head of the group, called Mi Familia Vota.
This region is going to determine who the next president is, Garces said. Central Florida is the swing region in Florida (And) Donald Trump needs Florida to win. If Hillary (Clinton) captures Florida, well, she captures the White House.
Central Floridas population has grown almost 10 per cent since the last election, and 60 per cent of that growth is Latino. Mi Familia Vota alone has registered more than 33,000 people in the area this year, and half were Puerto Rican.
Conley-Strange played a role in registration.
She came in September to meet Democratic party organizers; helped set things up for the arrival of her friends; and made calls to register voters. She sat near Spanish-speaking colleagues, and turned over the phone whenever she couldnt communicate with someone in English.
Her friends arrive over the coming week.
They include a former Manitoba Liberal candidate and provincial party official. Because she arrived earlier, she got to attend a campaign rally last week featuring President Barack Obama: It was like seeing a rock star, she said. A once-in-a-lifetime experience.
She said she supports the Democrats for their shared views on social issues, like same-sex marriage and womens rights. As for their opponent, she expressed dismay over things Trump has said about foreigners, like Mexicans.
It just goes so far beyond anything were used to seeing in politics, she said.
It cant become the norm.
The one thing Canadians cant contribute to this election is money.
I asked (the Democrats) if I could buy a T-shirt, she said.
They said no.
A foreign national can volunteer for a U.S. party and, in fact, Canadian and American campaign workers regularly help parties across the border. The federal Liberals even lease the same voter-outreach software used by the Democrats so Conley-Strange knows the system well.
Foreigners cannot, however, make financial donations.
That includes buying partisan souvenirs.
So putting the pieces together, these women were sexually abused and/or raped by Trump or his sons...and they have all been paid to do this by the Clinton Foundation and Campaign committee...
Watch and see...course with what is coming out on Hillary about her ‘sexual under aged ring’ with Bill, Jeffrey Epstein and others, this won't matter...as we know, Trump hasn't been in Canada, only Ivanka, Don Jr. and Eric...so good luck ROTTEN...you do what you have to, your finished and the only NEW PANT SUIT your getting is an orange one with a NUMBER on the back...
we already have their Stanley Cup, and have owned it since 1993.
Round these bitches up, let them sit in a cell a night or two until they comprehend that direct foreign influence in our elections is illegal and not neighborly. Then have the RCMP pick their stray moose.
Oh Canada! I love most your people, but stay TF out of our business. You’d be the first to howl if we went up there poking our noses in your elections. I wonder what The Queen would say about your behavior?
We never forgave them for the Blue Jays winning those World Series.
If they were to knock on the door....it would be best to pretend you are hopelessly unable to pick the right candidate, and let them spend two hours talking to you over Hillary. Five or six a day like that....and their enthusiasm will drain out.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
I have thought of doing that, to tell the truth.
Lol!
I have actually talked to a couple of guys who got deported from Canada because they took jobs up there, and instead of applying for the appropriate work visa they told Customs upon entry they were there for a “vacation”.
Then after two hours tell them, "I already voted for Trump."
Canadians -— GO HOME AND STAY HOME!!!
Yes, I was shouting!!!
Send them to Mexico with the rest of the illegals/undesirables...
Funny you would say that.I've done a good amount of traveling in my day.Trips to First World *and* Third World countries.Among those trip are about a dozen crossings of the US/Canada border...all by car.Canada is the only country that's ever given me *any* trouble at the border.I was "detained" (no handcuffs but not free to leave) for 90 minutes while the guards took my car apart, demanded the password to my laptop and asked me dozens of questions about firearms. They were always polite and "correct" but they also made it clear that they were not my friend. After their search I was allowed to proceed. The only thing I can think of is that given I have a very common name (and appearance) someone with my name might have been on some watch list.
As for the other crossings the Canadians were friendlier to me than were the US guards when returning home.
I wonder if on the US/Canada border an agent is likely to be more harsh with their own citizens than citizens of the other country.
I thought the demonrats hated foreigners influencing elections . . .
