Stopped flying in 2012 after about 25 years of 50k+ miles per year... no more TSA groping and fake feel good security BS. Business or 1st most of the time but even there the overly obese found a way to to invade your space not to mention those who can’t shut up.

There is no doubt that if airlines charged by weight, there would be a massive, yes, a massive, shedding of adipose tissue by people who fly frequently. Public health wise, this would be a good thing.

If you ship a package airmail, guess what?

They charge more for a larger/heavier package, and that includes the USPS, part of the US government.

Does that violate the rights of the person who shipped the package?

Fat people should boycott flying altogether

Should obese passengers pay more to fly?

What about passengers who don't carry one ounce of fat but are 6'10' and weigh 375?

They should be stacked side-by side so those who don’t flow over into adjoining seats can be comfortable.

Is the encroached upon individual entitled to compensation from the airline? Win a few cases on this issue and the airlines will be forced to come up with an industry standard for treating oversized passengers or widen seats. Of course the net result may be even higher ticket prices.

Should homosexuals and promiscuous men and woman pay more for medical insurance...How about alcohol drinkers and tobacco users, shouldn’t they pay more for medical insurance too...”The Devil’s Advocate” would like to know.

It could be convincingly argued that those who smoke should pay more for health insurance.Ditto those who are overweight. It can also be argued that those who don't wear seat belts should pay more for car insurance.

And yes, even I...who am a few pounds overweight...can see paying at least a little more for a plane ticket if you're overweight, just as you pay more if your *bags* are overweight.

And although I've never experienced it myself I've read stories of passengers who were so huge that they spill over into the seats next to them making people in those seats particularly miffed. They should be required to buy two seats.

According to reports, Destro was not able to comfortably sit in his assigned seat, and spent much of the nine-hour flight from Cape Town to Dubai standing or sitting in crew seats.

Many of the fairly frequent flights I take are long distance ones (I enjoy far off places). My cardiologist has strongly advised me to be up and walking around as much as possible during long flights so as to avoid "Economy Class Syndrome" which,he says, isn't particularly common but *does* happen. So maybe the guy who was suing was done a favor by the fat guy next to him.

Yes. The seats are small enough and uncomfortable enough as it is. If I pay for it, I'm not going to give up part of it to someone else. I don't care if you're just a big person, obese, whatever. If you don't fit, don't fly or buy two seats.

Of course, I rarely fly anymore. Used to be, I flew a couple of times a week for my job. Now, it is maybe once a year. Maybe. Even that seems like too much. I have a trip coming up in a couple of weeks that my wife made the arrangements for and sadly we are flying. I would have given up a day on either end of the trip to drive but... At least we are flying Southwest and get to board/pick our seats and who is beside us. There will be three of us flying together, so we can take an entire row and not worry about some obese person imposing on us.

I wonder how hard it would be to have an arm rest that could be raised up a foot to form a "wall" between seats. You could claim your space and block anyone from "invading" your area.

If a large person were blocked in on both sides by walls put up by other passengers, it might be nearly impossible for the large person to fit. Two solutions:
1) They could buy two seats next time.
2) They could be the ones pacing the aisles and trying to find a place to be comfortable (I never understand why average people are the one who end up fleeing and seeking relief while the big person stays put and flows over into more than one seat)

Series: The Honeymooners
Episode: Alice and the Blonde

Trixie: Whoever said the Age of Chivalry is dead was right. ... on the bus there are just two empty seats. And who sits in those two empty seats?

Alice: Ralph?

Trixie: (nods her head)

Passengers should pay by the pound. That’s pretty simple.

If you ship a package, it costs more as the weight goes up. Why should shipping living carcasses be any different?

Fools! Just travel via Gulfstream IV (or larger) like hildabeast demands when she flys and you’ll have plenty of room!
