~ Hall of Heroes ~ Leroy A. Mendonca Info from here. |
|
Leroy A. Mendonca was born in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, on 2 August 1932, and is of Portuguese ancestry. While attending President William McKinley High School, he was a AJROTC cadet, and graduated in 1950 as a soldier in the United States Army during the Korean War. He posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his actions on July 4, 1951. |
Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division Place and date: Near Chich-on, Korea, July 4, 1951 Entered service at: Honolulu, T.H. Birth: Honolulu, T.H. G.O. No.: 83, September 3, 1952 Citation:
Sgt. LeRoy A. Mendonca, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. After his platoon, in an exhaustive fight, had captured Hill 586, the newly won positions were assaulted during the night by a numerically superior enemy force. When the 1st Platoon positions were outflanked and under great pressure and the platoon was ordered to withdraw to a secondary line of defense, Sgt. Mendonca voluntarily remained in an exposed position and covered the platoon's withdrawal. Although under murderous enemy fire, he fired his weapon and hurled grenades at the onrushing enemy until his supply of ammunition was exhausted. He fought on, clubbing with his rifle and using his bayonet until he was mortally wounded. After the action it was estimated that Sgt. Mendonca had accounted for 37 enemy casualties. His daring actions stalled the crushing assault, protecting the platoon's withdrawal to secondary positions, and enabling the entire unit to repel the enemy attack and retain possession of the vital hilltop position. Sgt. Mendonca's extraordinary gallantry and exemplary valor are in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Army.
In 2001, the Bob Hope-class roll on roll off vehicle cargo ship USNS Mendonca was commissioned in the Military Sealift Command, and named in honor of Sergeant Mendonca. |
Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families. This is a politics-free zone! Thanks for helping us in our mission! |

Howdy, Kathy.
Quiet day today? Did you get to finish up a few things you’d started yesterday?

Howdy do, Conor. *Hugz*
Glad your knee’s feeling better and that it wasn’t injured as badly as you feared.
Sounds like you had a good day even if you weren’t able to plant some of the flowers.

Our weather here has been quite pleasant actually, cloudy and about 68 degrees today with mild winds.

Good evening, Radu!
*HUGS*
I was really worried at first - I had a similar incident five years ago - required surgery and several months of PT to resolve.

Howdy, PRO.
Is the weather still crazy there? Saw another short report on things this evening on the Nashville news. They were reporting from the coast and didn’t say anything about what’s going on inland. Hope it’s a lot calmer there than on the coast!

Easy to imagine why you'd be worried! Glad it turned out not to be so bad after all but
any knee problems are no fun at all.
I saw where you're taking a little trip to Niagra Falls. I hope your knee behaves so you can enjoy the trip. Sounds niiiiiiice!

It has been ages since we had any sort of vacation - just the two of us this time.

Hiya radu!
No big weather problems and warmer here today.
Still feeling yukky enough to just hang inside all day and rest.
Your day OK?

Whew! Glad that mess isn’t clobbering y’all. It looked pretty messy and wild where they had their camera people.
We have to figure out how to exorcise that durn “crud” bug so you can feel up to snuff again! It stinks not being able to get out to enjoy nice weather before winter moves in.
It was a decent day. Went to visit Hubby’s aunt for a while this afternoon. Oh what a thrill. LOL
We got a brief rain shower this morning that dumped a tenth of an inch .... just enough to wash the dust off all the leaves. It was sunny when I woke up and fairly warm. Going to be HOT the next few days so I’m glad I didn’t put all of my summer clothes away yet.

Howdy, radu! Did you have a good day? Mine was great except for the 93 degree weather. LOL! I wonder if we’ll even HAVE fall and winter this year! :)
