"An executive order was issued Thursday, October 14, that outlined the countrys contingency plan in the event such weather events lead to significant disruption to systems like the electrical power grid, satellite operations or aviation."

“The grid is generally not vulnerable to EMP. EMP will do far more damage to electronics.”
The grid is chock full of eletronics. An EMP will bring the grid down, probably immediately. EMP resiliency efforts are focused on how quickly the grid can be brought back up after that. It could be a long time.
Why won”t they just HARDEN THE D*MN GRID?!?!?!
It is the policy of the United States to prepare for space weather events to minimize the extent of economic loss and human hardship. The Federal Government must have (1) the capability to predict and detect a space weather event, (2) the plans and programs necessary to alert the public and private sectors to enable mitigating actions for an impending space weather event, (3) the protection and mitigation plans, protocols, and standards required to reduce risks to critical infrastructure prior to and during a credible threat, and (4) the ability to respond to and recover from the effects of space weather. Executive departments and agencies (agencies) must coordinate their efforts to prepare for the effects of space weather events.
I guess Zero gave a Jerry a carbon offset for farting cows.
I never thought this guy is as smart as HE thinks he is...
Why doesn't he just sign an Executive Order outlawing Solar storms?
It would be just as effective and a whole lot cheaper...
Sure. And a nearby lightning strike delivers far more energy as EMP at basically the same high frequencies as EMP. Most electronics survives fine with some surge protection. You are correct that EMP will bring parts of the grid down, not by blowing transformers, but by disrupting SCADA and networking. Those are easier to replace, and won't nearly as long as the transformers. Back up within a week.
The damage he’s done in just 8yrs, will be with us for decades, if not generations.
“low frequencies require much more energy than high frequencies to induce current”
I’m not sure you have a good understanding of what happens with an EMP. This is what happens:
1. The nuclear blast generates gamma rays that interact with the atmosphere creating an “RF pulse” that is intense and destroys many elements tonic systems
2. Scattered gammas and neutrons create a “lightning like” energy field
3. The expanding, then rising plasma ball surrounding the nuclear detonation causes geomagnetic field deformation inducing currents in the earth that can find their way onto transmission lines and into transformer windings. This is similar to what happens during a solar storm
Excellent synopsis
One more SCOTUS appointment would have hurt us for up to 50 years.
Roberts is bad enough. Thanks to Bush that guy will flake out on us every so often for up to 30 or 40 more years.
That’s how a guy can really hurt you. Hopefully Trump will swing it back in our favor. I’m not totally thrilled with his picks either. Some are no doubt quite good, but there is at least one that worries me.
“Sure. And a nearby lightning strike delivers far more energy as EMP at basically the same high frequencies as EMP.”
No.
Lightning is much lower in frequency and very localized. I encourage you to do more research and learn more about it before claiming to know what you are talking about.
Looks like lightning has around 1 microsecond and EMP is 0.01 microsecond or less rise times.
They can't even get the date right.
Oct 14th was Friday, not Thursday.
Have to go back and redo those TCC curves in the Protection Studies.
No. The primary threat of solar events is to the satellites. The primary threat of EMPs is to people’s imaginations.
One microsecond is roughly 1MHZ frequency content, wavelength of 300 meters. Tough to cause electronics damage through radiated energy unless very close.
Most lightning damage is conducted energy.
EMP frequency content is up to 1000MHZ, most is below 300 MHz. It is “near field” in nature, nearly constant over a wide geographic area. Very destructive.
Why do you think this is the case?
Because 300 miles is a lot further up than people think, and in reality nukes are going to be low altitude and most everybody in the EMP zone will also be in the blast zone and the state of their electronics won’t really matter.
Didn’t RR have an appointee who’s not been a very reliable voting Conservative, too? Kennedy?
I don’t remember Trump’s SCOTUS ‘wish list’; I’ll have to look it up.
“Because 300 miles is a lot further up than people think, and in reality nukes are going to be low altitude and most everybody in the EMP zone will also be in the blast zone and the state of their electronics wont really matter.”
An EMP can be manifested from 30km on up. At very high altitudes above 400km its effect weakens.
What you fail to realize is that an EMP is the desired strategy many would-be attackers.
Small warheads and launch systems that can reach EMP altitudes are achievable by countries like N Korea.
It’s not a made up thing.
