Ford idles Mustang plant amid slow sales

Ford Motor Co. is idling its Flat Rock Assembly Plant, where the Dearborn automaker builds the Ford Mustang and the revived Lincoln Continental.

The site will be idled for one week, Ford spokeswoman Kelli Felker said in an email.

"We continue to match production with demand," Felker said in response to a query about whether the idling was due to slower Mustang sales. "Mustang remains the top seller in its segment in total and retail sales..."

Sales of all Ford-brand cars fell by double-digits in the U.S. in September, as Americans continue to gravitate toward crossovers and SUVs, but the Mustang's decline was particularly abrupt. Its sales dove 32 percent to 6,429 units on the month.

Through the first nine months of the year, sales of the Mustang are down 9 percent to 87,258 units. During that same time, sales of all Ford cars were down 13 percent to 525,869 units...

Through the first nine months of the year, sales of the Camaro are down 11 percent to 54,535 units, and sales of the Challenger dipped 2 percent to 51,141 units during that time.

When I grew up in Detroit, they used to say, "When the nation's economy sneezes, Detroit gets double pneumonia."

Auto sales are a leading indicator, and they aren't looking very healthy right now.

No, its more like Americans getting tired of badass cars, and going for a bit more utility.

No, its more like Americans getting tired of testosterone, and going for a bit more station wagon.

Fixed it.

I drive a Scion FR-S. Love the handling, though most people think 200 horsepower is not enough. What cracks me up is that the Firebird in Smokey and the Bandit only had 185. My how times change.

Anyway, regarding the mustang, my stepson picked up a really souped up six speed manual version brand new about 8 months ago and wanted me to test drive it because he was wondering about a funny noise.

The noise was nothing but OMG! That car was the thing of dreams in teh 60’s and 70’s. It was a monster! And loads of fun to drive.

I’m a small car and gas mileage nut so I’d never own one, but that was a serious rush.

I leased a 2017 Escape last month. It was going to be a Fusion, but with the incentives, the Escape SE was cheaper than the Fusion SE and had the same gas mileage.

I’m thankful to have a salesman I trust, that pointed out the savings.

Obama and HilLIARy have scared everyone into buying more firearms - sometimes you can’t even get into the store, it’s so crowded

My ‘67 Mustang was a lot of fun. Now I struggle to get out of one. However, I love my ‘07 Expedition.

Been in the market to replace my Lincoln MKZ for many months now, but have yet to see any "end of year" sales from Ford-Lincoln.
On the other hand, Toyota (and others) has been running ads since August.

We are looking for a used car right now. A basic sedan in the 2-years-old, 30k miles range is 20k+. Huh? It wasn’t that long ago that got you a new car. But I see the new cars going for 35k+. Yikes. No wonder sales are lagging.

Ford Motor is nothing like it was years ago.

Ford cannot compete with Toyota or even Honda.

Simple as that.

You can stick a Fork in Ford Motor.

They used to say “ ON a Hot Summer’s night; ... You can almost hear those Ford’s just Rusting Away out there!”

I’m on my fifth Mustang GT since 1983. They aren’t as easy to get out of as they were back then, but it’s worth the effort. But age is a factor, so my 2016 has an automatic.

You have no concept of the durability of the coyote engine in the mustang.

The jacked up prices don’t matter to the average consumer. It’s the “zero percent for 72 months” that hooks ‘em. I had a banker friend tell me the only thing his customers cared about was whether the monthly payment fits into their budget.

These are the people who wake up in their 60s and realize that they have about $1000 in savings.

Ford is making some of the prettiest cars ever.

The Fusion is beautiful and so is the Lincoln MKZ.

The Mustang is not a car made for everyone.

The original V-6 Mustang was a “secretaries” car.

It was pretty and didn’t cost a lot. Not a lot of cars like that back then.

The present Mustang V-6 is not the only “secretaries” car anymore.

The V-8 Mustang is a great car. They put a new rear end in it so it corners better.

It really is hard to find a better value for a performance car than the V-8 Mustang.

The young men just aren’t into performance cars like my generation was.
