Beginning today, a controversial sculpture depicting a nude female Christ on the cross is returning to New Yorks Episcopal Cathedral, displayed on a chapel altar.
Christa, the bronze sculpture by artist Edwina Sandys, will appear alongside the work of 21 other contemporary artists according to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine web site: all exploring the language, symbolism, art, and ritual associated with the historic concept of the Christ image and the divine as manifested in every personacross all genders, races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and abilities.

America is under God’s Judgment for its wickedness. No one should be surprised that Satan is taking over the “churches.” It has been going on for a long time.
I doubt that even the Romans crucified women.
“I doubt that even the Romans crucified women.”
You’d be wrong.
Time for the Russian/Korean/Chinese attack now?
The ultimate spanking?
I totally get sacrilege laws now.
This is just stupid, and serves no purpose.
Purely as a piece of art, I have no problem with it. I’ll leave it to others to say if it’s “blasphemy” (It probably is, but like the word, “racist”, “blasphemy is too easily used). I will say it has no place in a Christian Church.
No, we will destroy ourselves from within.
The Institute of Religion and Degeneracy?
Look at a picture - it’s not even half-way decent art, it’s bad art.
What do you expect from a church that was founded to satisfy a king’s lusts?
Blasphemy in the church.
If the message of the art is to equate the sufferings of a modern feminist, or of “women” in general, with the sacrifice of Jesus, it is indeed blasphemy, a kind of self-worship.
I wonder what the moosies would say to a moHAMmad sculpture on a Cross?
Perhaps not. But Muslims have.
Found this on the search engine.
I’m not observant, and have no problem with it as a piece of art. A generation from now whatever passes for anthropology will be unpacking the intelectual proximity of this piece to the exhausted philosophy of Simone Beauvoir as interpreted by Andrew Dice Clay’s Madison Square Garden routine on some womens’ need to assume the role of martyr. Entire masters theses will be composed, no doubt. When it comes to expression, I’m in favor of letting people get it out of their system. Let’s you know how weird they are...keeps it from becoming a neurosis.
But installing it on an altar in a Christian cathedral...hard to offend me, but that would/does. Where are the Nigerian bishops when the Anglicans need them?
Look up National Lampoon #21, “The Story of Jessica Christ”. The crucified feminist bit is very old (1971).
The early 1970’s feminists had already grown so obnoxious that NatLamp went after them instead of the usual targets, Richard Nixon & the Vietnam war.
“Germaine Spillane’s” crime novel “My Gun Is Cute” was another blowback at the Gloria Steinem crowd.
Anyway FWIW, “Christa” beats the heck out of “P*** Christ”.
