Dean Baquet wasn't bluffing.
The New York Times executive editor said during a visit to Harvard in September that he would risk jail to publish Donald Trump's tax returns. He made good on his word Saturday night when the Times published Trump tax documents from 1995, which show the Republican presidential nominee claimed losses of $916 million that year enough to avoid paying federal income taxes for as many as 18 years afterward.
Federal law makes it illegal to publish an unauthorized tax return:
It shall be unlawful for any person to whom any return or return information (as defined in section 6103(b)) is disclosed in a manner unauthorized by this title thereafter willfully to print or publish in any manner not provided by law any such return or return information. Any violation of this paragraph shall be a felony punishable by a fine in any amount not exceeding $5,000, or imprisonment of not more than 5 years, or both, together with the costs of prosecution.
Baquet said during a panel discussion at Harvard that if the Times' lawyers advised him not to publish Trump tax returns, he would argue that such information is vital to the public interest because the real estate mogul's "whole campaign is built on his success as a businessman and his wealth."
It is unclear whether Baquet was speaking hypothetically at the time or whether his newspaper already was in possession of the documents published Saturday. The Times wrote that "the pages were mailed last month to Susanne Craig, a reporter at the Times who has written about Mr. Trumps finances...

Clinton camp forces politico to change their headline.
during the debate hitlary makes a comment about “pays no taxes” and PRESTO the NYT has this magic article.
Coordination? of course.
Wanna bet? Rudy would do it for free.
Risked legal trouble? From what government agency?
They are probably the ones who mailed the returns.
Jail’s not good enough. Sue the NYT, sue big.
There is so much wrong with releasing those returns, I hardly know where to start......I hope Trump SUES & doesn’t quit doing it.
First-—This was 1995!!! 21 years ago.!!!!
How many businesses have filed bankruptcy EACH & EVERY year 1995 thru 2015 in the USA???? Big—Small— & then there was GENERAL MOTORS——
This also flies in the face of the constant BS barrage of Clinton assertions (LYING) that the ECONOMY was so rosy during Bill’s term in the Oval office—where we know what he did with cigars & interns!!!
Clinton benefited from the economic work of Ronald Reagan. That pipeline fed Clinton’s economy for many years. Clinton should have been impeached for his outlandish behavior—and now Shrillary thinks no one should be reminded of Bill’s outlandish behavior!!! Once a cheater—always a cheater—and women know what I am talking about.
The tax laws were NOT written by Trump——Nor were the tax laws written by any of the rest of us common Americans. They were written again & again so that the friends of the 2 major parties could wring every penny out of their income. That is fine with me——I am a bookkeeper for small businesses, and I have seen for over 40 years how hard some of these people work to support their families. But going after those who work HARDER & are more dedicated to the business isn’t right. You are punishing success.
Trump HAD & still HAS every right to use the tax laws as they are written. Trump gets audited every year!!! DO YOU??? DOES ANYONE YOU KNOW GET AUDITED EVERY YEAR???? I don’t anyone who lives with that inconsistent nightmare -—nor does anyone here on FR, I’ll bet.
I remember seeing the STACK of paper about 2 feet tall that represented the 2016 income tax returns for Trump for all the states he does business in & the Federal returns. It was pretty astonishing. That was April of this year.
Trump employs over 22,000 people all over the world—most of them in this country. How much ENVY can the NYT & others put into play here? I don’t envy Trump-—altho, my yearly income is less than $15,000. I would like to be young enough to be of service to him in one of his businesses. I would never worry about whether my paycheck would cash timely.
I NEVER got a paycheck from a POOR person or a HOMELESS person. I worked for Kroger—Oscar Mayer—IGA —Universal Studios—Shell Oil and other big players before I went self employed on my own. I got lots of experience which I used for those small businesses. I do not have an accounting degree—but I took all the accounting classes available at the community college & I got a 4.0 grade in every one of them. I didn’t do that with being graded ‘on the curve’ either. 2 of us got consistent grades of 99 +++. That experience helped me do that. Then I put it all to use for those small businesses.....When I first picked up clients—at night or on weekends, I charged only $5 an hour-—but I got MORE experience!!!
I still only charge $20 PER HOUR & that has been my rate since Jan 1989. There is a price point you cannot damage when dealing with small businesses. They are loyal to me & I am loyal to them. I cannot buy that loyalty for any price. Could I charge more today? Perhaps-—but I don’t need to lose the 2 clients I still have at age 76.
Trump has every right to protect his own investments & the investments of others. IF there is a business that isn’t doing well enough, he has the right to declare bankruptcy with that business.....You cannot keep pouring money down a rat hole. ANY business has to protect the funds of the investor-—whether that is one person or many persons.
Who orchestrated the BANKRUPTCY of General Motors????
Barack Obama—that’s who. Hundreds of small town GM dealerships were closed-—and haven’t been reopened. That action impacted so many small towns in America that no one wants to talk about. Hundreds more people lost their jobs & a good auto dealer mechanic found it hard to find a new job with another dealership-—because they already had their staff......
The GM Bankruptcy was totally illegal-—and the vendors who got stiffed with open amounts on Accounts Payable were severely hurt. Many closed THEIR doors & haven’t reopened.
Obama engineered the GM bankruptcy to kill the existing GM stock & give ALL the stock of the new GM to the UNIONS....Everybody is forgetting all of this!!!
Ask yourself where the financial arm of General Motors went (GMAC)——I can tell you where-—ALLY BANK opened up with the Accounts receivable of those car payments. ONLY an ONLINE bank. Not a real bank—no brick & glass store you could go to—no person you could look in the eye. Don’t even see ads for them any more-—. DID THEY ALSO GO BANKRUPT?????
The usual rate of failure for a new business is over 80%-—no matter how well intentioned the owners are. Most are under capitalized & don’t know a damn thing about plain old fashioned BOOKKEEPING. I know——I have done bookkeeping for many a business who didn’t need me more than 8 hours a month-—and was run/staffed by only one person. Engine builders—crankshaft grinder—insurance agent—geologist—racing hardware (nuts & bolts)——appliance sales & repair—air conditioning/heating contractor—landscape materials—welding shop—architect. I have done books for the appliance sales/repair person for over 46 years & the air conditioning guy for over 40 years. NEVER been audited for any work I have done for my clients.
I am talking about PLAIN OLD FASHIONED BOOKKEEPING-—not the income tax preparation, altho I did the financials, the payroll records, W-2’s/1099’s & the sales tax reports & bank reconciliations, and the year end closing of the books.
One year I carried 19 clients with the highest having a gross income of over $3.5 million & 15 employees. Many had gross incomes of less than $100,000 & no employees—only themselves.
To try & VILIFY Trump for having a year when he had various businesses declare bankruptcy is just plain nuts-—
Put even 50% of that energy into finding out what is actually going on inside the CLINTON FOUNDATION—and then you might think differently. Less than 6% of money “donated’ to the Clinton Foundation finds its way to needy causes-—Ask yourself where the rest has gone.
Ask your self how ethical it is to charge a large company on Wall Street $500,000 for a 20 minute speech that is never exposed to the outside——THAT looks more like a BRIBE to me. There is NO ONE in the world that is worth paying $25,000 per MINUTE to hear them ‘speak’. Both of the Clintons have done this scam for years——
How come the NYT doesn’t go after that nonsense???
Sorry for the long rant—but I am pissed!!!
“Mailed last month”
That is only 3 days ago.......
Think about the movie/book:
“Absence of Malice”...
The New York Times needs to find out from the inside out how much fun it is to declare bankruptcy.
Trump needs to sue their pants off.
A general was outraged on listening to it and said that kind of view could endanger lives of troops operating in enemy territory. Wallace repeated the story is the first consideration.”””
IF Pearl Harbor happened today, this media would have told the Japanese exactly where every single personal weapon was in the entire country-—
They are beyond words, but they are vile.
They, the NYT are democRATs. They are Stalin’s useful idiots. Loyal foot soldiers for the revolution.
Lynch’s DOJ, nor the IRS will prosecute them.
Maybe a Trump DOJ or IRS will.

State returns are a virtual mirror of the Federal return.
In many states-—a COPY of the Federal return MUST be attached to the state return. Both for individuals & companies.
Sounds like the new pc term for broke the law.
Bill Clinton risked legal trouble by lying under oath Hillary Clinton risked legal trouble by having an illegal server
Just looked up this Dean Baque dude and yep, yet another one of barry’s sons - these people are unhinged. Can’t let a single one off that plantation so lil Dean had to go ‘risk’ doing something *cough* illegal.
What a damn farce
That’s a point Trump should raise when this comes up at debate.
They should be made aware that they’re next, whether next is next year or thereafter, then.
They’re not undecided.
Totally agree.
The times set this up to be a positive reaction. Their readers were supposed to say he’s a crook by agreeing with them. Way too many people agree with things they do not understand without researching it because someone supposing to have knowledge said it was so. And like during the Bush years, they are blaming Trump for everything they can. If they throw it enough, some will stick. That’s just the way they work.
During their contest, People actually blamred the Santa Ana winds on Bush?

It doesn’t make any difference what it is, it is sent to lead people into false assumptions until they can get one to stick. And even if it doesn’t it will just be another negative to keep the people negative about Trump. Pavlov’s dogs. And the public is lazy, and doesn’t care if it is true of not until it bites them on the keyster. So, they assume it’s right.

If the NY Times is willing to break the law to bash Trump, why should readers trust their ethics in any other story?
