A white silhouette of an exotic dancer straddling a stripper pole distracted drivers on Route 101 eastbound Sunday after the image appeared on a highway sign thats supposed to display nearby attractions.
Its not clear when the image was placed on the blue sign just before Exit 5, but State Police reported it to the state Department of Transportation early Sunday evening, according to DOT spokesman Bill Boynton.
Boynton described the image as a three-foot tall sticker or decal. He said it wasnt authorized and that he had no idea how it got there.
The sign is used to advertise attractions, but its been blank for some time.
Prominent Concord businessman and Republican Steve Duprey was one of the drivers who was surprised to see the image on a highway sign.
When I first saw the sign I thought the state had gotten too open-minded in applying the new sign law. Aside from being inappropriate for a highway sign, I thought it was sort of a good prank and suspected that traffic off Exit 5 into Raymond probably hit record highs, he said.
State officials werent amused by the prank that came over the busy Labor Day weekend.
DOT crews moved in quickly to remove the image as soon as it was brought to their attention.

We get them here too, same thing. I know there is one that has had one on it for about 10 years...probably more.

So, is there a stripper off Exit 5 or not?

I don’t think so, it was a prank, I think. Sounds like the sign had been there for a long, long time, waiting for something, a MacDonalds, Sunoco station, or Motel 6, but...nothing.
Just a large blue canvas for someone who was compelled. Like I said before, at least they didn’t spray paint a penis or something up there.

I admit the whole thing just seems funny to me...though I do see the downside:
DAD: "Okay kids, the next game we play -nope, no early looking...will be the first to spot a blue sign, and tell me what is on it!"
KIDS: "YIPPEE! I SEE ONE, IT'S..." (silence)

I have always thought the Burma Shave thing was a wonderful and unique idea for its time! Very creative...

Loved seeing those Burma Shave sequential signs as kid riding to family vacation spots. Sure had you waiting for the next one.
Very effective brand retention device.... still talk about them decades after they’re gone.

"...Very effective brand retention device..." Wow. Isn't that the truth, and when you said it that way, it made me realize even people who never used, felt, smelled, or had even SEEN Burma Shave knew the long-dead product/company.
THAT is impressive.

That’s actually kind of funny, especially considering that it has apparently been blank for quite some time.

I don't know why it reminded me of the scene in the movie "Rat Race" where the kids see a sign for the "Barbie Museum" and convince their parents to go in, but it isn't what they expect:
(not a good movie, but had a few funny parts, this was one)

I just drove my daughter to OU from NJ and was astonished at the number of adult bookstores and attractions along I-44. It went something like this: 1) Adult Bookstore 2) 5 miles later a church proclaiming to save your soul 3) 5 miles later a billboard condemning pornography. Repeat...Times Square is tame these days in comparison.
