But playing on the team is a voluntary activity, and this is a condition he’s demanding of his players. I don’t see how it’s a violation of their rights and subject to a lawsuit. They’re all free to own firearms.
That said, I think it’s a stupid policy and I wouldn’t entertain playing there with that condition. Hopefully everyone else feels the same way.

Small point of order. Gun ownership is not a constitutional right. A right granted by man can be taken away by man. The constitution is written legal evidence of the premise that we are guaranteed certain rights by our creator ie:God. “Among those Life Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”

IIRC the Heller decision noted that the 2nd Amendment codifies a previously established right.
The First, Second, and Third Amendments prohibit the federal government (and due to the 14th Amendment, the states) from impinging upon these already existing rights.

They are under scholarship contracts. He is trying to amend those contracts, unilaterally, in ways that contravene The Constitution. I also believe those contracts would include clause that both parties much agree, in writing, to change or add anything.
So yeah, it’s not “voluntary” and his “condition” is both illegal and unconstitutional.

He cannot legally do that. If someone took him to court, he would lose. If a team member used a gun illegally, he could boot them from the team, but he cannot legally boot them for owning a legal gun.
I will certainly not be going to any games this year (my son is in his freshman year after four years in the Marine Corps).
