Report: Mizzou head coach prohibits players from legally owning handguns.
Missouri head coach Barry Odom Missouri football coach Barry Odom has instituted a team policy that prohibits his players from owning handguns, according to Matthew Stevens of The Montgomery Advertiser.
Stevens reports that Odom does not want his players owning handguns, even if they're obtained legally, while they are members of the Mizzou football team.
However, Odom clarified that guns used for hunting are separate from the team policy. While many schools prohibit handguns on campus, Mizzou football seems to be the only program that specifically prohibits owning a handgun as a separate policy for student athletes.

So if I use my Glock 41 for hunting, I can play on the team?
Textbook case of “rules are meant to be broken”.
If I were an alumni at Missou, I’d demand the firing of this a$$hole.
could he prohibit them from sitting during the National Anthem?..or would that be racist...
Mizzou with its diminished enrollment, bleeding cash, hasn’t lost enough money I guess.
Lawsuit time.
Idiot or an honest assessment of the kind of people he has as players?
He will never be able to recruit from Chicago or most big cities. If you can’t do that, you won’t win in the SEC
I hope they are also prohibiting them from illegally owning guns.
How would the coach know you own anything?
The boys in Chicago don’t legally own their guns.
I can’t explain why their enrollment is down. That said, there are probably members on the team you wouldn’t want near a gun.
Mizzou has become an embarrassment to the state of Missouri. The Columbia campus could cease to exist and the state would be better off.
I say this as a Mizzou grad.
So he wants to disarm his players....who are predominantly black?
Disparate effect = racist.
Gun ownership is a constitutional right. Could the coach order players not to vote? Could he order them not to pray or attend church? If someone sues, this will last five seconds in court (unless I suppose they get an equally kook lefty judge).
He just made them all targets.
Come to think of it, I believe this is largely meaningless. I believe it is a federal law that you must be 21 to purchase a handgun. Most college students and players are under 21. His rule is largely a gesture.
Definitely. He’s a public official acting under color of law who has just illegally deprived his players of their constitutional right to own hand guns. That’s a legally actionable civil rights violation under the United States Code, that could entitle the aggrieved players,to actual and punitive damages plus attorneys’ fees.
21 to purchase from a dealer. 18 for a private sale or gift.
