The British spy whose body was found padlocked inside a bag in his flat had illegally hacked into secret data on former U.S. president Bill Clinton, it has been revealed.
Gareth Williams, 31, was discovered in a holdall in the bath at his London home five years ago this month, but the mystery surrounding his death has never been solved.
Today, it has been revealed the spy had dug out a guest list for an event Clinton was due to attend as a favour for a friend.
The hack breached Mr Williams' security clearance and this sparked anger among MI6 bosses as tensions rose with U.S. security services over the spy's transatlantic work, The Sun on Sunday has reported.
A source said: 'The Clinton diary hack came at a time when Williams' work with America was of the most sensitive nature.
'It was a diplomatic nightmare for Sir John Sawers, the new director of MI6 at the time.'

Some, even many, of the listed deaths are foolishness. "So-and-so was photographed with Bill Clinton at a political function, then dropped dead of a heart attack six months later. Coincidence? I think not."
However, there are a fair number on the list that any reasonable person would wonder about.
There were rumors last week that the Secret Service was scouting our neurosurgery hospitals for HRC. Johns Hopkins was on that list, although I imagine any hospital in the world would be available to her.
Teddy Kennedy came to Duke for his brain tumor.
If I were HRC, I would go to Bethesda Naval Hospital and bring the surgeon to her.
I have had three friends die of brain cancer. Each had about 10 years between first diagnosis and death. There was the initial operation to debulk the tumor, chemo and radiation (gamma knife) and then about 8 years of relatively normal life. When the tumor(s) returned, they were everywhere and could not be stopped, just slowed down a bit. Walking was quick to go and they used a walker then a wheelchair, lest they fall and create more problems.
If HRC has surgery before the election, we will know. It is not easy to recover from brain surgery.
Hillary’s hit team is very professional.
They never get caught and they frequently make it look like suicide.
