San Francisco's subway has a creative solution to stop its elevators from smelling like urine
Business Insider ^

The so-called "self flush and sanitizing system" is part of a $2 million effort to fight BART's stench problem. The agency also plans to tear up the floorboards of 80 elevators and replace them with a coated material that makes the elevators water-tight. While it may prevent urine from seeping into the machinery, it's unclear whether sealing the urine is the best solution for smell.

If the misting system at Civic Center works, BART wants to install it at other downtown San Francisco and Oakland locations. The work on the floors is expected to be complete in April.

They are going to need to figure out a way to have drainage and some means of hosing down the surfaces.

San Francisco has a chronic public urination problem. They’ve tackled part of it with pee-resistant paint.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2015/07/27/go-ahead-and-pee-on-san-franciscos-walls-theyll-pee-right-back-on-you/

My guess is that people realized that the walls will bounce their pee right back at them, so now they seek out elevators to pee in. Why not just treat the elevators with the same paint?

The liberal solution would be to offer classes, counselors and outreach to encourage people to pee in bathrooms, likely with a multi-million dollar budget.

They don’t smell ‘like’ urine, they smell that way because they are public urinals.

I’d favor a chemical compound that reacts with urine to form a toxic cloud in the elevator cab.

Man, talk about a missed acronym opportunity.

I would have named it the Periodically Initiated Self Sanitizer.

If they brought back elevator operators it would probably be cheaper plus the sheite would stop.

For that money you could hire cranky old ladies with tazers and pay them $20 an hour.

Will they empty themselves out of crap, too?

I’d like to see that. Self-Composting elevators.

The way you would do it would be to have a plastic grate that people stand on, say 1 inch in width. Then you run 220 volt live wires below the grate. So normal passengers would not run the risk of being shocked; meanwhile, the piss would go through the grate, hit the live wires, and the pisser would be fried like in a bug zapper.

There was a time when there was such a thing as an ELEVATOR OPERATOR, to press buttons and keep people from doing such things.

You’ve got to make $45,600 after taxes just to cover rent on a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco. That doesn’t include food, utilities, insurance, clothing, transportation, etc.

That’s $21.92 per hour for rent alone, pretending there is no such thing as Income Tax/Social Security/Medicare.

Either you need to build a heck of a lot of robots, change city planning, or start offering incentives to get people to move someplace else... like sloshing stinky elevators??!

My BIL, a proper American of Thai origin, rides the BART to work daily. He will agree that San Francisco, in some aspects, is as bad or worse than a third class nation. However, he has a better job and sees less corruption here. Definitely a Trump supporter over the witch.
