South African runner Caster Semenya dominated the women’s 800-meter final Saturday in Rio, finishing well ahead of the competition to take home the gold medal.
Semenya is widely believed to be “intersex,” defined by the United Nations as people born with sex characteristics “that do not fit typical binary notions of male or female bodies.” The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) last summer suspended International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) rules prohibiting athletes who exceed a testosterone threshold from competing in women’s track and field events, clearing the way for Semenya to compete in Rio.
The CAS ruling claimed that high testosterone levels didn’t necessarily give female athletes an advantage.

Semenya finished a whole second ahead of the next-closest finisher, setting a personal best with a time of 1:55.28.

I have no idea. I just feel sorry for them and their parents. Thankfully it is rare.

Semenya screwed Melissa Bishop out of a bronze medal. Possibly a silver, because that Kenyan woman looked pretty manly too.
Francine Niyonsaba (Silver) and Margaret Wumboi (Bronze) are both strongly suspected to be intersex, like Semenya. When the IAAF lifted the rule that made sure Semenya would not have testosterone levels greater than normal range, Niyonsaba and Wumboi also started posting times far greater than they had under the old system. Melissa Bishop was likely the highest placing XX in that race.
I’m not sure where they’re at, but the two other women are: Princess Letizia of Spain and Carla Bruni of France. There’s a guy in a suit standing at attention near the door. Then there’s Michelle looking like she’s been drinking at a backyard BBQ all afternoon and fell down a couple of times.
