South African runner Caster Semenya dominated the womens 800-meter final Saturday in Rio, finishing well ahead of the competition to take home the gold medal.
Semenya is widely believed to be intersex, defined by the United Nations as people born with sex characteristics that do not fit typical binary notions of male or female bodies. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) last summer suspended International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) rules prohibiting athletes who exceed a testosterone threshold from competing in womens track and field events, clearing the way for Semenya to compete in Rio.
The CAS ruling claimed that high testosterone levels didnt necessarily give female athletes an advantage.

Semenya finished a whole second ahead of the next-closest finisher, setting a personal best with a time of 1:55.28.
This is what women wanted: equality.
Would 1:55 even have qualified as a finalist in the mens 800?
Rudisha (Kenya) first at 1:42.15, Makhloufi (Algeria) second at 1:42.61, USA’s Clayton Murphy third at 1:42.93.
I guess some people will do anything to cheat - including sliding into home.
There were guys on my high school team who ran faster.
So unfair to the real women. It makes me sick and mad.
This is GREAT news! This could be the end of ‘women’s sports’ as we know. Hoist on a PC petard.
WNBA will soon be dunking.
WNBA will soon be SLAM dunking.
Intersex is a birth defect and not a choice. Sad, really.
Women will be benchwarmers in womens sports. Womens teams will be the junior varsity teams.
"O brave new world that has such people in it. Let's start at once."

And you thought the WNBA players were ugly before....
I had exactly the same impression. I don’t watch television, and haven’t watched the games except for some short intervals, and the other night when she went to bed and left the television on, I stopped to watch, and had that same confusion.
I figured maybe it was a warmup and they had a guy pacing them or something, and didn’t think about it until the next day when I saw an article on him.
I do need to say this though-I have plenty of ridicule for transvestites and transsexuals, but I give this person a pass. He didn’t ask to be born this way.
Interesting, but that is the “Holy Grail” of the homosexual community, that they can find a genetic tag to make it no different than race or gender.
They are going to lie, cheat and steal to reach that goal, we should remain skeptical. But this guy doesn’t fall into that group, IMO.
No. Semenya has a very rare but naturally occurring genetic condition as a result of which she has a mix of male and female sexual attributes. This is not a personal choice. It is not a psychological condition. She was born with it. Previous generations would have called her a hermaphrodite. That term has gone out of usage for various high minded reasons, which may even be correct. Intersex seems to be the new preferred usage. I don't see any point in quibbling about the term.
The point is, she doesn't deserve insults. She was born with the condition, which in her case includes internal testes and male levels of testosterone production. This does give her a significant athletic advantage against normal women. People can differ on whether or not she should be allowed to compete in women's events, but again, she shouldn't be the target of insults.
From what I have heard, that isn’t the case with him. All I know is he has testes (undescended) but no ovaries or uterus. I would bet that he tests genetically as a male, but I haven’t heard any information on that.
I don’t think they should have let him compete against women, but I can’t find it in me to get on his case. Just my opinion.
This covers the situation well. This isn't a case of Bruce Jenner putting on a dress and competing against the ladies.
Essentially that is happening. The second best athletes will find it eminently sensible to decide to be women and compete in “womens” sports until there are no women left in competition.
I don’t think they should have let him compete against women, but like you, I feel sorry for that person.
I make it a rule never to pass judgement on someone because of how they were born. If someone puts tattoos all over their face, I am going to judge them on that. If someone who is black is acting like an idiot in conformance with the moronic “black culture” that requires they wear their pants halfway down their crack, a wifebeater on their torso, and a hat sideways with a flat brim, well, yeah. I judge them for that. If someone cuts their hair into a mohawk, I will judge them on that.
But if someone has physical features as a result of how they came into this world, then their physical appearance has no bearing on my estimation of them.
I do take some issue with this guy forcing the issue to allow him to compete against women, but that is about it.
It’s not like.
“Her” testes never dropped but she has an XY chromosome. Folks like her do well in female athletics because they have about a 5-6% boost over most other physical females because the testosterone.
It’s a rare condition but outwardly they have the plumbing of a woman.
Exactly. Bruce Jenner and his enablers deserve all the ridicule anyone cares to heap on them, but not this guy.
If Usain Bolt “self-identifies” as a woman, he’ll still be winning gold medals when he’s 55.
