Louisiana gov: Trump helped 'shine a spotlight' on flood recovery

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) said Sunday that Donald Trump has helped draw attention to recovery efforts after the recent devastating floods in his state.

In an interview on CNN's "State of the Union," the governor downplayed critical remarks he made before the Republican presidential nominee visited his state.

"I didn't dismiss his trip as a photo-op. Before he came down, I said we welcome him here, we want him to be helpful," Edwards said. "And we hope that it doesn't turn into a mere photo-op."

Edwards said Trump's visit to the state was positive for Louisiana.

"Because it helped to shine a spotlight on Louisiana and on the dire situation that we have here, that it was helpful," he said.

"I also appreciated the good phone call, the conversation that I had with Gov. [Mike] Pence [R-Ind.], who was sincere and genuine when he called, and we spoke for a long time on Friday morning about their desire to be helpful," he said about Trump's running mate.

Trump draws attention to the plight of Louisiana with a visit and a semi full of food, water, supplies, etc.

Hillary gives the governor a phone call.

Obama golfs.

I pray to God every night this guy wins the election, if he doesn’t it will go down as one of, if not the biggest missed opportunity in US history. 8 years of Hillary, just imagine what the year 2025 would be like. Dick Morris got it exactly right, it WOULD be Armageddon.

No, that's Obama who is into photo-ops. Wait till he goes down there and you'll see the difference. Absolutely 100% guaranteed we will see headlines around the country with multiple photos of him hugging crying people. "The Savior is here! The Savior!"

Mr. Trump shows no bigotry. He sheds a floodlight on very many things which need to be seen in the light of day.

BO’B and Illiary lead from behind, blinded by their insides

“Gov. Edwards put his state before politics”

You’re giving him too much credit. I read his remarks before Trump got there and it was a pure partisan hack attack. When he saw the response Trump got, and the donation Trump made, he had to pivot.

nobama, with his visit on Tuesday is, as usual, a day late and a dollar short.

GO TRUMP!!

Thank you DJT for your efforts at shaming nobama into a visit. Your efforts worked.

Let us remember that in an awful natural disaster like this, the time period between Saturday and Tuesday seems like a lifetime.

That governor didn’t react to Trump’s visit or donations...He reacted to the LA voters reaction to Trump....

La. gov tells Trump to volunteer or donate instead of coming for photo-op

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said Friday that GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump is more than welcome in the state if he plans on helping flood victims, but not if it’s just for a photo-op to gain voters.

“Donald Trump hasn’t called the governor to inform him of his visit,” the Democrat’s office said in a statement. “We welcome him to LA, but not for a photo-op.”

Mr. Trump and his running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, are expected to head to Baton Rouge on Friday, but the campaign has said little about their plans in the flood-stricken state capital.

“Instead we hope he’ll consider volunteering or making a sizable donation to the LA Flood Relief Fund to help the victims of this storm,” the governor’s statement added.

The Advocate, the state’s largest daily newspaper, issued an editorial Thursday calling on President Obama to cut his vacation in Martha’s Vineyard short so he could assess the damage in person, but the governor said a presidential visit would divert emergency resources that are already spread thin.

“Quite frankly, that is something I don’t want to go through right now,” Mr. Edwards said at a news conference Thursday afternoon. “While the president is welcome to visit, I’d rather he give us another week or two. And then he can visit.”

Trump has acted very presidential throughout his campaign.

Right after the Paris terrorist attacks, long before the convention, Trump went on CNN to express his solidarity and sympathy for the victims and their families. Obama could hardly even spare a minute from his golf game to make a statement—and even that was only *after* Trump gave the CNN interview.

I’m not surprised that Trump takes the lead in acting presidential with this flooding, either.

It is a stark liberal/conservative difference. Liberals give lip service to “caring” but do nothing, while conservatives step right in with action, but don’t spend much time talking about how much they “care.”

He's been acting presidential for months.

They have no clue what acting presidential looks like.

OK, Mr. Edwards, I hope I do not see one photo of Obama visiting the people of Louisiana. And, he better roll up his sleeves and help.
