The media vs. Donald Trump: why the press feels so free to criticize the Republican nominee
VOX ^ | 8-16-2016 | Ezra Klein

here is a case to be made that the media created Donald Trump. It was, reportedly, his anger at being dismissed by political pundits that led him to run for president in the first place. And it was, arguably, the media’s wall-to-wall coverage of his every utterance that powered his victory in the Republican primary.

But slowly, surely, the media has turned on Trump. He still gets wall-to-wall coverage, but that coverage is overwhelmingly negative. Increasingly, the press doesn’t even pretend to treat Trump like a normal candidate: CNN’s chyrons fact-check him in real time; the Washington Post reacted to being banned from Trump with a shrug; BuzzFeed News published a memo telling reporters it was fine to call Trump "a mendacious racist" on social media; the New York Times published a viral video in which it simply quoted the most vile statements it heard from Trump’s supporters.

Trump’s speech last night was something we’ve been waiting for a Republican to say since Reagan. He called out the Democrats for the carnage they have done to blacks in this country, and it was long overdue. That should put an end to the argument of who was the best presidential candidate the GOP had this year. Clearly, it was Trump. Rubio, Kasich, and Cruz wouldn’t of had the stones to make a speech like that.

“The problem is that in this case the public largely agrees with the media.”

You are confusing “the public” with your average democrat, Cable News viewer, illegal, victim card carrier, transgender, pervert..not to be confused with the truly needed. All the losers have one thing in common..they want something for nothing.
Hillary could be a dead horse, and she is, and they are going to vote for her as long as she keeps promising them “pie”

why the press feels so free to criticize the Republican nominee

The press feels free to criticize nominees, office-holders, and sitting Presidents...as long as they're Republicans.

If they're Democrats, they're one of them; interviews are just chummy sit-downs; analyses of policies is just an opportunity to spout off some campaign talking points.

re>Why is Hitler-y keeping Caine hidden? Is he polling poorly?

I might be the last to know the reason BUT I find it interesting that Biden is starting to play a bigger role than Hillary in her own campaign. My guess is the Democrats are in panic as Hillary's health fails.

They are not “free to” criticize Trump.

It is a compulsion.

Everyone in the “mainstream media” works for a giant media conglomerate that is owned lock, stock and barrel by Wall Street.
Hillary Clinton is the Wall Street candidate. She works for the same people who own the media.””

Nope. The old media is controlled by the DNC and has been for decades. Politicians can takeover any business they feel like. Obama took over GM and installed his buddies and stole 90% of bond holder equity and gave it to the unions. Free enterprise built the country.

There’s really no doubt in any sane person’s mind that the press is in the bag for the leftists. They helped create the Trump phenomenon by giving him free wall-to-wall, relatively positive coverage of his every utterance throughout the primaries.

This helped Trump to basically invest $0 in advertising throughout the primaries, giving him a yuuuge advantage, immensely helping him to become the Repub nominee. While others spent millions, he spent nothing. Now it appears they’re trying to pull the rug out from under the candidate they created with their free, relatively positive coverage, by shifting to nonstop negative coverage.

It’s almost like they concentrated on getting the candidate they thought would have the least chance of surviving the general election nominated, to improve the odds of their beloved leftist candidate. And now that they have him nominated, they’re starting to tear him down, once again to help their beloved leftist candidate.

They did much the same thing to Reagan. But he was The Great Communicator and able to go around and over the heads of the MSM and take his case directly to the people, and that was before the Internet. Maybe Trump will be able to do the same thing somehow.

But I think he’s going to have to start spending big bucks to get his message out there, far more than he’s spending now. It appears most Americans are low information voters nowadays and will need things spelled out for them. He needs to do a lot of national “buys” of air time to get people to focus. Failure to do this would be an irrational move on his part. There’ll be no movement in the polls unless the people see something about him and like what they see.

The MSM, meanwhile, will make sure to paint him in the worst light possible, every single day.

Ask the folks at CNN why their ratings are tanking after so many bold faced lies about Trump. MSNBC can be watched as a circus with Matthews, Maddow, and the morning horny two. CNN has no charm. Just a litany of lies.

“In this cycle, stridently anti-Trump rhetoric helps their ratings because he is so widely detested by a majority of the nation’s population.”

Fortunately for Trump, Hillary is detested more.

The problem is that in this case the public largely agrees with the media. In other cycles, the media has been hurt by being too anti-Republican, and has had to moderate their message due to lost viewers. In this cycle, stridently anti-Trump rhetoric helps their ratings because he is so widely detested by a majority of the nation’s population.

This election ultimately isn't about Trump.

Its about people fighting back against a brazenly corrupt power structure that includes the MSM.

Of course the msm is going to attack Trump w/ everything they have, but just like the rinos that are attacking him, they are only making him stronger.

Good question. Clinton has forced himself on some. Trump had a great pickup line when he was single, “Wanna ride on my helicopter to dinner?’
