Republican Mayor Richard Berry was driving around Albuquerque last year when he saw a man on a street corner holding a sign that read: Want a Job. Anything Helps.
Throughout his administration, as part of a push to connect the homeless population to services, Berry had taken to driving through the city to talk to panhandlers about their lives. His citys poorest residents told him they didnt want to be on the streets begging for money, but they didnt know where else to go.
Seeing that sign gave Berry an idea. Instead of asking them, many of whom feel dispirited, to go out looking for work, the city could bring the work to them.
Next month will be the first anniversary of Albuquerques Theres a Better Way program, which hires panhandlers for day jobs beautifying the city. In partnership with a local nonprofit that serves the homeless population, a van is dispatched around the city to pick up panhandlers who are interested in working. The job pays $9 an hour, which is above minimum wage, and provides a lunch. At the end of the shift, the participants are offered overnight shelter as needed.

That’s how it’s done!
The dems never solve problems, they want to keep them around so that they can bandy them about come election time!.....
The mayor has a good plan
Good on the Mayor. By hiring day labourers, he avoids all the paperwork of ‘regular’ temporary employment.
There is in Calgary, a block near the downtown core, called ‘cash corner’. Some unemployed people, seeking temporary work until they can find full time work, arrive there at 6:00AM.
During the boom years, 40-50 people a day, would be hired for daily, ‘cash’ work, be it moving, manual labour, etc. Now, apparently, only a few get hired each day.
Apparently, back in the ‘40s, there used to be a government unemployment office located there. Those seeking work would check the boards inside the office and then leave. Eventually, it became known that there was a steady supply of day labourers available at that corner and potentially employers began looking for temp hires. Eventually the office moved to the new Federal building, but ‘cash corner’ remained and still remains. In a city of boom and bust, ‘cash corner’ works.
Amazing that WaPo identified this mayor as a Republican...
then let the unions supply the funds to help these poor souls.
ian a union man for 60 years.
London may have a similar program. Street and building cleaners. City looks so much cleaner than years ago.
Beggars make a lot more than $9/hr.
Day jobs? But, but, John McCain says that the illegals do the yobs Americans don’t want to do.
Could it be that Juan McAmnesty is full of manure after all?
“They are given a lunch and provided overnight shelter as needed.” Who provides the lunch and shelter? If it is the city, it is a handout and a subsidy. Show me the bottom line; my guess the city is in the red for this.
This is a good program but the unions will want them to be union jobs at $20 and benefits.
FWIW, The term, 'Moonbeam' was coined by none other than George HW Bush, the same one who called Reagan's economic policy, 'Voodoo Economics'.
Personally, I wouldn't want to parrot anything vomited out by a Bush especially one who promised 'Read My Lips. Know New Taxes', but that's just me.
FRegards,
>>Here. Ill lend you some optimism for free :)
I already have a bottle. I keep it next to my tank of unicorn farts. I’m saving both for Winter Solstice Holiday.
Exactly!
lol!!! Thank God. I didn’t have much to spare!!
In Switzerland there are people to wash the sidewalks and the street signs. I don’t think any street signs in Los Angeles have ever been cleaned except for graffiti removal. Switzerland looks so clean. There are so many homeless here. Definitely I’d be up for this kind of thing here.
Some of these buttwipes who stand at the freeway exit with their signs make more than I do.
Good. I have a homeless uncle, who’s always ready to work, even if it’s also the case that he quits jobs way too quickly. But when I’ve tried to help him out, the “jobs programs” that were available weren’t helpful to him really. This sounds like it would be.
Um...it wasn’t a COMPLIMENT, LOL!
Many homeless are mentally ill.
It’s very sad that these people are not taken care of... we waste enormous sums of money on the illegal aliens and “refugees”. Those funds should be put to much better use caring for these unfortunates!
You can judge a people by how they treat children, the elderly and the infirm... our grade is NOT good :-/
Pray for America....
