BRASILIA, Brazil - The United States was eliminated by Sweden in Olympic women's soccer quarterfinal after a penalty shoot-out Friday.
The U.S. team, which is the reigning World Cup champions, had been favored to get to the gold medal showdown -- but are instead out in the round of 8.
The Friday match was a stunning loss for the U.S. team, which has played in the final every year since women's soccer became an Olympic sport in 1996, winning gold four times.
This is a developing story ...

Maybe they still do it, but the IOC used to allow the host nation to add a few of their own local events as demonstration Olympic sports. I think taekwondo was added for the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, for example. Curling and short-track speed skating were added for Calgary that year.
I’m shocked that there are lesbians in women sports. At least we can cheer for the Swedes to kick our asses because they’re all heteros. U-S-A!
LOL
I believe those guys are in great shape. They are very agile. As you state, one point per hour is the reality all too often. Baseball can be that way too, but it’s quite an accomplishment if it is.
To me soccer always seemed like the sport you went into if you were afraid of bats and hard balls, and having a line drive hit at you, or facing a fast pitcher.
Moms just love to have their chillen out there safe on a soccer field. Any piddin can kick a soccer ball. Oh that’s so much better... he he he.
Yup. . .
And I am not interested in watching a bunch of “males” wearing silk shorts and dancing around like the ball has cooties.
;-)
LOL
And why in the world is golf an olympic sport now? Aren't there enough PGA tour events?
I had to laugh when I heard one tour professional on why he turned down the olympics. He said there was no prize money......LOL!
The reason she called them cowards was because of the way they played the game.
To put it into perspective as if it were a hockey game, whenever the Swedes took possession of the ball, they kept "icing" it back deep into the U.S. zone instead of mounting an offensive attack..........
While there was no way they could score and win using that tactic, all they had to do was prevent the U.S. from scoring and then take the game into a shoot off. The Swedes did not play to win, they played for a 0-0 tie. It was a 90 minute waste of time........
Being the competitor that Solo is, I can't blame her for being pissed off and saying what she did. What upsets me is the fact that none of the American sportscasters called the game for what it was and instead are piling on Hope Solo.
I'd have said a lot worse since I'm not a good loser either........
I gone off curling since the doping report on the Russian team revealed they had two curlers who were dopers. I can't figure out if they were given "uppers' or "downers".
