BRASILIA, Brazil - The United States was eliminated by Sweden in Olympic women's soccer quarterfinal after a penalty shoot-out Friday.

The U.S. team, which is the reigning World Cup champions, had been favored to get to the gold medal showdown -- but are instead out in the round of 8.

They had a hissy fit and dropped it years ago because MLB refused to halt their season and allow top-tier players to compete in the Olympics. Can’t imagine they changed their minds on that.

Yeah right. I can see Dusty Baker sending Wilson Ramos, Daniel Murphy and Steven Strasburg off in the middle of August to compete in the Olympics. Playoff? World Series? We don't need no stinkin' World Series! This is the Olympics man!

Hank: “Bobby, I never thought I’d need to tell you this, but I would be a bad parent if I didn’t. Soccer was invented by European ladies to keep them busy while their husbands did the cooking.”

Bobby: “Why do you have to hate what you don’t understand?”

Hank: “I don’t hate you, Bobby.”

Bobby: “I meant soccer.”

Hank: “Oh. Oh, yeah, I hate soccer. Yes.”

Bryce Harper wants to play in the 2020 Olympics.

He might be out of his slump by then...

I’m not watching the Olympics at all this year. But that doesn’t stop me from getting enjoyment from professional athletes losing. Sorry ‘bout that.

I have an idea. Why don’t they just put the “shoot outs” at the beginning to spare everyone the tedious game. That’s the way most of them end up anyway.

I think Nippon Professional Baseball actually shuts down when there is an Olympics with baseball.

The problem is it is such a grueling season, to add so many games is asking a bunch, even if they tacked it onto the beginning like the WBC.

Harper should watch Murphy, holy cow that guy a tremendous hitter.

The US header goal, I guess that could be argued as a pull-down by the US. But the Swedish goal? No way that was even close to offsides, but I guess the ref got confused because a US player basically passed it to the Swedish player.

If it were basketball, I'd suspect a makeup call. The refs erased two goals, one for each team, seconds apart. I agree the second was a clearly bad call, but the first was at least highly questionable.

The call on the US foul was questionable.

But the offsides call on Sweden was ridiculous.

Well, the women are playing for the love of the sport. And that’s all it is—a sport. You don’t give a crap about them, and I can assure you that they don’t give a crap about you, either.

I was happy to see them lose because they represent Obama’s definition of “America” and “who we are” instead of mine...

From what I heard, someone on the US team (Solo? Goalie?) was very unsportsmanlike after the loss, saying something like "they were cowards" and "the best team didn't win". Real tacky stuff...

Vote Trump!

at least in basketball there is scoring to enliven the moment.... with soccer they can easily go an hour or more with no one scoring at all..... boringgggg

[I actually enjoyed playing soccer in h.s. and college, but I have never liked watching it much and like it less and less with the passing years....]

That’s right, it was the goalie - the one who was charged with domestic violence...

While I don’t like the outcomes of some sporting events, if they are won according to the rules then so be it. Many teams “park the bus” if they have a better chance winning outside of the scheduled game time; Sweden did it well (with the same coach who led the US to many victories before).
