Rio Olympics security firm fired, maligned police force takes over

Less than a week before the 2016 Rio Olympics are set to start, the Brazil Ministry of Justice terminated its contract with a private firm that was supposed to provide security for the games. The ministry cited “incompetence and irresponsibility” from the Rio de Janeiro-based firm Artel, and moved to strip them of their duties.

It’s not hard to see why the Ministry of Justice reacted so harshly. With only a few days left until the first venues are set to open, Artel admitted that they have only hired 500 security personnel.

They were supposed to hire 3,400.

These staff members were going to be responsible for screening visitors outside each Olympic venue. X-ray machines and body searches are now going to be handled by local police forces to secure areas that are expected to have tens of thousands of screaming fans.

The Olympics start next week too.

This lack of security forebodes really bad things happening next week.

I hope I'm wrong.

Rio de Janeiro-based firm Artel...

That’s where I’d turn if I needed security :)

Can only imagine the list of former clients.

There’s going to be some new events in Rio.

Like the “100 Meter Run From the Thugs Sprint”.

If the Games end without a tragedy I will be shocked out of my skin. Rio is if anything worse now then it was when I was there in the 80's.

And let's not even get into what the police were like.

I think I don’t understand the instruction but thank you for trying. I looked up the IME thing and it sounds like your keyboard has to be set for either/or, not two languages.

Amusing that they only noticed the firm hired only 400 people a week before the olympics start. What a cluster.

Wonder how much money they’d already funneled to these guys?

Then you have to ask the next question...if 3,000 cops are shifted around to this duty....that’s 3,000 cops who won’t be available for regular patrols or increased crime in the area. Who fills their shoes?

How did they ever get this close to the games without recognizing this problem? I can't imagine how the hire, train, and coordinate security in one week.

This is why a third world nation shouldn’t host the Olympics. I guess China and Russia both were able to pull it off because they are totalitarian nations.

I’ve been worried about this event ever since it was awarded to Rio. This news makes it worse; I have many friends going there as staff and some athletes I’ve known for years.

I think you hold down the ALT key and type 0209 to get the n with a squiggly (tilde) over it. Would try it but I’m on an ipad this morning.
