At the Democratic National Committee I ran into Gary Johnson, the former New Mexico governor and Libertarian Party nominee for president. Here's a transcript of our conversation, edited for clarity, and reorganized thematically.

Their idea of liberty is smoke dope, have sex with anyone, get abortion on demand, and not have to face any consequences of their actions, including any pesky guilt or scorn.

Religious freedom/Freedom of conscience is the cornerstone of liberty. Its strange that a libertarian would support using the heavy hand of government to abuse individuals who simply wish to not associate, endorse, or serve another.

Many (not all) of the Libertarians I've met in my life were either full-on Socialists or Libertines (anything goes with no consequences), not Libertarians. I've met relatively few true Libertarians.

What is Gary Johnson going to do about someone who has a religious belief that they should put Gary Johnson in a cage and light him on fire. If you discriminate against them and stop their religious act are you opening a big hole?

i consider myself Libertarian on many issues, but Johnson and America’s organized libertarian party are often just bizarre to me.

For example, their continued emphasis on drug and marijauna freedom - its just stupid. They only need to say “let the states decide.”

Also, their push for open borders and gay marriage - again, they are actually “activist” and not libertarian, in my view. TRUE libertarians would let society, states and communities decide - without top-down activism, promotion or government incentivizing.

So a Libertarian doesn’t recognize the right of people to refuse behaviors and attitudes they find offensive and immoral

Add one to the “Establishment” List

What a hypocrite. He conflates discrimination with shooting people and uses that as his basis to use governmental force to make people violate their religious beliefs and consciences. That is about as anti-libertarian as you can get. He isn’t just anti first amendment, his position is against the fundamental principles of the party he is really running as.

Maybe some face-to-face plotting with the Dems to take votes from the Pubs in November.

Meeting and scheming in person leaves no email trail...

In another interview Johnson stated he was for open borders, thought the court was right on gay marriage but said polygamy should be decided by the states. In a follow up he was unable to explain his reasoning.
