The police were ambushed again in Baton Rouge on Sunday, three dead and three seriously wounded. A dozen cops were ambushed in Dallas on 7 July, five of those died.
Police nationwide are literally in the crosshairs. Baton Rouge is just the latest killing field. Whats happening here?
Cops are often called many things, but for most folks theyre peace officers or lawmen. They are, indeed, the thin blue line between us and the worst among us.
Somehow that paradigm has been turned on its head. Punks, thugs, and religious cults are now portrayed as victims whilst cops have become the bad guys. Even the last Super Bowl featured a twerking, faux blond, rap mannequin attacking cops.
We might start with culture, the Beltway culture of racial parsing, where crime is rationalized by skin tone. Take the other day when the president ran off a string of irrelevant statistics about the likelihood of black Americans being stopped or searched by cops. The reasoning here is astounding! Are we to believe that fewer traffic stops in high crime favelas would mean fewer confrontations, fewer misdemeanors, or fewer felonies?

“They are, indeed, the thin blue line between us and the worst among us. “
They are often the worst of us, like the ones that like to shoot family dogs, or the FBI agents that shot a kid in the face with an M-16 because they told him to exit the vehicle so he reached for his seatbelt. Or maybe the ones that are on the take. Or the ones that shot a man in the back running away.
Cops are NOT innocent of the feelings against them.
Most cops are just doing a good job. But they don’t speak out against those that aren’t.
We’re a dying country.
I’m the last of my generation to be brought up with respect for authority, to fear the police and to do the right thing.
The values that defined America are breaking down and we’re regressing to a feral society.
Not the kind of sight I expected to see in my lifetime.
State and local Governments are not exactly friendly these days—and haven’t been for a while.
The Cops are at the intersection between People and the Government.
Just say’in. Maybe we don’t blame the Cops so much.
Cops should be armed with fully automatic M16’s, Kevlar body armor and military protective helmets.
LOL, to what end?
You know what’s going to happen?
The whole country is going to get Baltimore’d:
Cops will slow roll to calls, do the very, very minimum, which I would understand.
The country will be led by gang-bangers and the elected buddies of gang-bangers, much as now but much, much worse.
“Alas, if the past is prologue, there will be no reflection or remorse in black America or at the White House this summer. Withal, lawmen and soldiers will still honor their duty. Cops are indeed the new centurions, all that stands between us and the abyss. Our prayers are with all those who serve and protect, all those men and women who go in harms way.”
Agree somewhat...its when the COPs become the mob enforcers of govt. However, theyve done pretty well at the ‘pigs at the trough’ routine when offered $ via asset forfiture, gun laws that give them a personal pass etc. They see themselves not as civilians (wich they are) but part of the Pass-Go class. Theres plenty of blame to go around here.
If the cities morph into war-zones the police will soon morph into soldiers.
While a policeman’s job is to protect and serve a soldier’s job is to attack and kill the enemy.
We are teetering on the edge of the abyss here.

There are a lot of wonderful cops who are selfless in serving their community, there also are plenty of bad cops who put themselves ahead of everybody else then shoot first and ask questions later.
To have a lawful and peaceful society we have to take the bad cops with the good cops and follow the orders of all cops whether we like it or not. We have to hope that eventually we will have a day in court and someone will sort out the truth. When we don’t do this then we get to a lawless society where it is much worse. Not only then will cops shoot first but so will everybody else that has a gun.
Bad cops need to pay for their mistakes. Good cops need to stop covering up those mistakes. Cops are trained and know what to do in a given situation, if they are too afraid to do their job as trained then they need to find another vocation.
I believe in cops and hope that most of them are good members of society that want to serve but I’m also smart enough to realize that like any other group there are bad apples in the barrel. It should be ok to get rid of the bad apples. It should be ok to admit we have a few bad apples.
We have bad doctors, we have bad lawyers, we have bad politicians and bad you name it. It is time to admit the truth.
The headline omitted the words “.... by a black.”
Its only open season by government approved racial hate groups like the Nation of Islam.
When one of these “events” explodes, they are better protected and have a better weapon ready right at the scene.
I want everyone to respect authority but law-abiding citizens should not have to fear the police.
Most municipalities provide patrol officers with rifles now. That said rank/file patrol offciers are notoriously bad shots. SOP is for them to contain and call SWAT. Think if all the extra tax $ needed to equip and train for the scenario you suggest. Its just not necessary. Policing like many other jobs is dangerous. If youre not OK with that find another job.
