Alton Sterling Reached for a Gun, Baton Rouge Detective Says

Officers were justified in their shooting of Alton Sterling during a confrontation in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, according to a police report on the incident. That shooting resulted in Sterling's death, which alongside the police-involved shooting of Philando Castile near St. Paul, Minnesota, triggered nationwide protests. From CNN:

In a search warrant affidavit seeking surveillance video from the store, [where police responded to a call about a man threatening another man with a gun,] Detective R. Cook wrote that the Baton Rouge officers deployed their Tasers after Sterling did not comply with their orders.

"While the officers were attempting to subdue the subject the officers observed the butt of a gun in the subject's front pants pocket," Cook wrote.

"When the subject attempted to reach for the gun from his pockets the officers fired their police issued duty weapon at the subject to stop the threat. The subject was shot multiple times and did not survive his injuries."

In recent days, the anti-cop crowd has has called for police officers to be trained in non-lethal deescalation techniques, whatever those are. Shooting a bad guy who reaches for a gun is the best deescalation technique known. It has the virtue of proving non-lethal to those tasked with protecting the public.

1. Of course they'll "cover" for their fellow officers

2. It's never okay to shoot an illegally armed perp just because he/she is resisting arrest and has been tazed already to no effect. Or not.

3. #factsdontmatter

I thought Harris ‘lunged at them’ and that’s why they tackled him to the ground without warning.

Of course, the video shows no such thing but it must be true since that’s what was said in the initial reports and cops don’t lie, right?

I did see a video where the cop took something out of the guy’s pocket after they blew him away....and it looked more like keys....quite small...

It is generally a bad idea to resist arrest. In this case, the guy thought it was worth his life to resist. Who are we to say otherwise?

Did this guy really hang out on a sidewalk selling CDs or was that a ruse to conceal an unsavory purpose?

I recall hearing somebody called the popo to complain about his activities outside the store. Haven’t heard anything about possibly offering anything else for sale.

In the entirety of one's life, many if not most FReepers have had an unpleasant (or unjust) experience or two with at least one law enforcement official.

I've noticed you seem particularly bitter at times regarding this subject. Care to share with the group what happened?

But...but...he never would have been in that position if they hadn’t stopped him in the first place - free pass to all Blacks because it will keep them from becoming a threat to the cops .....

Trying to pleasetheBLM folks is irrational. Any Negrokilled in a police struggle, even if he dies with his own gun blazing, is an occasion for riots and murder while if the same perp manages to kill a cop or two it is a cause for celebration and, of course, riots. The new PC position seems to be that is a Negro’s cultural right to kill policemen and white people.

Sorry - I meant Sterling. I keep confusing this guy with a murderer from like 20 years ago.

Given that tazing was tried, there should seem to be a lot less of an issue here than some other more questionable kills. Was this truly the worst allegation of effing up that could be come up with?

I could come up with a worse one from some time back that didn’t end up with a kill but did end up with the injury of a child when a dog was intended to be shot but the fine gentleman missed. And the response from the PD was to be “glad she was healing” but chilled from anything more. In older days wouldn’t we see something like the wives of the officers offering help to that family?

Oh but... she was white. White lives and bodies matter less I guess.

From Saint Skittles to the Gentle Giant and these latest two in LA and MN, the one thing they have in common was that the deceased all did something to make an armed man think they were trying to kill him.
If you make an armed man think you are trying to kill him,
expect to get shot.
Whatever color you are.

The media deliberately and intentionally chose to hide this from the public.

I agree. Worth repeating.

A panhandler called 911 and said someone matching Sterling’s description had pulled a gun on him. The police arrived knowing they were likely dealing with someone who was armed. They weren’t hassling him about selling CDs in the parking lot.

Sterling had arrests for domestic violence, aggravated assault, resisting a police officer with force (and he had a gun on him that time also),burglary, carrying a firearm while in possession of drugs, statutory rape of a 14 year old, and the list goes on. Go to Heavydotcom and see the whole list.

In a sane world, we’d never even know who AS was.

It’s interesting to watch this society crumble from within during these last days.
