It’s happened to most of us – some more than others. You’re driving down the highway or a backroad or maybe you roll through a stop sign one too many times, and here they come. The flashing lights, the piercing sound of the siren. It’s nerve-racking, to say the least.
With so much tension surrounding recent officer-involved shootings, I feel a duty to open the discussion on what to do when legal gun owners either open or concealed carrying are pulled over by police.
No matter what state you find yourself in, national firearms expert and trainer Massad Ayoob explains there is a universal way to inform the officer you’re carrying: hand your concealed carry permit over with your drivers license.

Hold your hands (pasengers as well) out the window in plain sight as the officer approaches. It will be greatly appreciated, and sometimes a ticket or citation simply becomes a frindly warning:)
IN Georgia, if you are a CCW carrier, you are NOT legally required to state such. You can present your drivers license along with the CCW permit, and if the officers asks” Do you have any weapons” You need only answer “not any that you need be concerned about.’
I got that advice straight from a policeman.

Excellent advice. Another piece of advice is, the first word out of you mouth should be;
“I have a CCW and am armed.”
I have used that or a variant of it for many years and never had a problem.
Of course here in Arizona, you only need to say, “I am armed”.
The answer is usually. “So is everyone.”
Which begs the question;

At night turn on every light inside the car.
Been pulled over twice for speeding since I got a CCW in 2001. Both times, rolled down my window and kept my hands on the wheel until the officer came to my window and asked for my license and proof of insurance. Before reaching for either I told him I have my license and CCW in my back left pocket, and where my firearms are located, then asked how he wanted to proceed.
In both cases the officer asked me to keep my right hand on the wheel and get my IDs out with my left. Then vice versa to get the insurance card out of the glove box.
And in both cases, after checking out my IDs they gave me a warning.
This being rural Texas and me being a local may have simplified things, but I think if the goal is to not come across as a threat it’ll go best for everyone involved.
How many guys carry their licenses in their front SHIRT pocket? Most would be fumbling with their back pants pocket to pull out a wallet wouldn’t they?

Not any that you need to be concerned about? A cop making a traffic stop is concerned with ALL weapons. If a cop told you that, he’s a complete idiot.
Happened to us once in Chattanooga. A city officer pulled us over (husband was speeding) and as soon as he got close to the truck my husband told him he had a 9mm on the seat. The officer said that it popped up on his computer that he had a carry permit and that he didn’t worry about the permit holders. He said he worried about the guns he didn’t know about. He gave us a warning to slow down and told us to have a nice day.
I’ve had two experiences with being pulled over while packing. On both occasions I kept my hands on the wheel with my license/insurance and my carry permit in them. I handed all three to the officers and put my hands back on the wheel. They asked if I was packing and then asked where the weapon was (J-frame S&W in front pants pocket). Both times the officers were courteous and professional. They thanked me for telling them about the weapon, told me to leave it where it was. We conducted our business peacefully and went our ways.
Why would you do that other than to be an ass?
Because the Georgia law here says they cannot ask you that question If they know you have a permit, that’s why. It is NOT being an ass.
NEVER EVER volunteer in any STATE. It is their job to prove reasonable suspicion. The proof of license is proof enough, dammit. Quite being a pussy.
VERY situational from locale to locale. If nothing else, keep you hands where they can be seen. In the video, Gresham has his DL and CCP in his top shirt pocket. Yeah, that’s usually where I carry mine. NOT! LOL! Reaching for your wallet in your back pocket or front pocket could get you shot if you don’t state you’re carrying and the officer gets a flash of your carry gun. Always be careful and safe. Especially in the current state of heightened tensions.
I get pulled over in Arizona and though I don’t need to ... I tell the officer that I am armed. The officer then asked where the weapons are and I say .. here and there and there and there ... in the front seat ... then in the back seat ... however, usually the officer says ... ok “my first name” as he/she already knows me.
Take a certified GA concealed carry class.
