Mr Farage said he had "done my bit" following the UK's referendum vote to leave the EU. He said the party was in a "pretty good place" and said he would not change his mind about quitting as he did after the 2015 general election. Leading UKIP was "tough at times" but "all worth it" said Mr Farage, who is also an MEP. He added that the UK needed a "Brexit prime minister".
Mr Farage said the party would campaign against "backsliding" on the UK's exit from the EU, saying he planned to see out his term in the European Parliament - describing his party as "the turkeys that voted for Christmas". He said his party's "greatest potential" lay in attracting Labour voters, adding that he would not be backing any particular candidate to replace him. "May the best man or woman win," he said. Mr Farage said he would "bury the hatchet with anybody" including UKIP's sole MP Douglas Carswell, who tweeted an emoji picture of a smiley face as the leader's resignation was announced.

Like Cincinnatus and George Washington, he has no ambition for personal power. He saw his duty and having fought and won the battle, now desires only to retire to the quiet life of a private citizen.
Great Job Nigel!! You are an international hero ! Enjoy retirement in you sovereign country.
is he a TORY now???
Yes! Farage is the best British leader since Churchill & Thatcher.
Exactly - Farage is probably gambling on the possibility of having more influence as a Tory/Conservative than as a leader of UKIP, which for better or for worse is regarded as a fringe party by many in the UK.
Men who lead revolutions are rarely the best ones to run things after.
Case in point, Lech Walesa, as great as he was in Solidarity, he was ill-suited to lead Poland after Communism fell.
In a Parliamentary system, leaders frequently step aside to allow an alternative. If the alternatives fail to win leadership, or if the alternatives prove unpopular, the original leader makes a comeback. Farage has resigned and made a comeback several times.
Or at may be as simple as Farage seeking power in the Conservative Party.
I enjoyed watching Farage BASH his associates here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlN9o3g-yuA
Every single one is an advocate for "social justice."
Seems like a preview of what to expect from the GOP in a few election cycles.
No, he is still a member of the UKIP Party.
“Who’s laughing now!”
then you’ve obviously never watched one of his speeches.
Wonder what this has to do with Mr Banks’ comments from last week on the future of UKIP.
Farage (descendant of a Frenchman BTW) will not be joining the Tories -- he would never win over the MPs to be elected PM.
you don’t directly vote for the PM — you vote for a party and the party chooses its leader who becomes the prime minister.
Farage has been fighting the good fight for many years, and now has victory—————He is a descendent of French Huguenot......(Protestant Calvinist...)...who fled persecution in the 1500’s
Nothing wrong with that!
Ok, thanks.
