It may have not been ripped off from Spirit but their is a medeival song that sounds EXACTLY like it. Of course that’s no longer copyright protected so it’s fair use.
But yeah, their first album is entirely covers, same as the Stones.

"Stairway to Heaven" is, indeed, a rock epic. This version, in my opinion, is far and away the best:
