AIRO (AP) - The voice and data recorders from the EgyptAir plane that crashed into the Mediterranean nearly a month ago are "extensively damaged" and will need repairs before they can be analyzed, an Egyptian official said Friday, dampening hopes for quick answers as to what caused the disaster.
The official didn't elaborate on how long the repairs would take but said if this cannot be done in Egypt, the so-called "black boxes" would be sent abroad. The official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak to the media.
With the wreckage of the Airbus A320 some 3,000 meters under water, the cockpit voice and flight data recorders are vital for piecing together the last moments of the flight, which plunged into the sea between the Greek island of Crete and the Egyptian port city of Alexandria on May 19, killing all 66 on board.
Earlier in the day, Egypt's investigation commission said the flight data recorder had been pulled out of the sea, a day after the cockpit voice recorder was also recovered. Both were brought to Cairo for analysis.
The memory units inside the recorders can provide key data, including the last conversations inside the cockpit, information about auto-pilot mode or even smoke alarms. They might also give answers to why the pilot made no distress call before the crash.
Experts say the data, combined with previously obtained satellite and radar images, debris analysis, the plane history and the pilots' records, can shed light on the most possible scenarios. No militant group has claimed bringing down the aircraft.

Well, no one was expecting this!
AS I PREDICTED YESTERDAY...............................
Yes it does take a little longer to alter the tape/memory card.
They have them. Obama would do the same.
Where are they sending them?
They probably need to be wiped, with a cloth, in Mecca.
"....anybody got one of those red dot things?...this is gonna take some time"< p>
The problem was they lost control of the narrative because Trump called it like it was right away and preempted their usual lies dismissive of terrorism in, once again, a VERY IMPORTANT ELECTION YEAR (like Benghazi), so all must be undertaken until another “Dude, that was like, two years ago” can be pronounced to the mindless Hussein Heads eager to vote for Hitlery.
Yeah. The final words were too badly garbled to report. Something about a snack bar, maybe?
“I hear someone yelling “Allah Ackbar”
“Probe it until you don’t hear that”
I worked on those crash recorders. The part containing the tape or the memory is armor steel and very small; about 2.5x4x5 inches if I recall. It is practically solid. There is nothing in the tail of the plane that could cause it to be crushed or damaged. It is much denser than any other part of the plane with the possible exception of landing gear or engine parts. The hollow part inside is filled with beeswax in case it is in a fire. The beeswax melts and keeps the innards at the temperature of boiling water for thirty minutes, which is longer than most fuel fed fires.
I’d bet a pretty penny that the actual memory or tape is not damaged.
Either the box was right next to any detonation aboard the plane or they are lying.
The box would have to hit the water at mach 20 to damage it.
Yeah ..... Cover up city.
Good info. That’s what I figured. Otherwise, what’s the point of having the black box except to capture extreme conditions.
The debris pattern(s) on the sea floor will tell us a lot.
Let’s see that.
How Conveeeeeeeeenient.
Here is a concept probably easier understood by the average person.
You can take your desktop computer and drop it off the roof of a 10 story building. The computer will be no good, but it is highly likely the hard drive will be OK, and even if damaged (inoperable) the data on the ‘disc’ is still there and can be read. You could even immerse it in water for weeks and it would be ok.
The ‘black box’ (yellow/orange in reality) is built much tougher than your desktop PC.
If they are sending them by FedEx wherever they are going they'll be there by 10:00AM tomorrow./snicker. If they are going to Obama's FAA they'll be lost forever by 10:01.
Doesn’t Egypt have some animosity againt HILLAry and Obama ? Seems there were some anti demonstration rallies in their past.
