Clinton University Scandal Netted Bill $16.5 Million

For all the attention the Trump University scandal has garnered throughout the 2016 election season, another education controversy has yet to receive as much outrage.
The Clintons are adding another check to their list of questionable practices as their connection with the Laureate International Universities allegedly paid Bill Clinton $16.5 million. The payments were over 2010-2014 to the presumptive first gentleman to serve as “honorary chancellor” of the for-profit universities and college.
The Laureate Education received a sizable amount of money from the U.S. State Department, while Hillary Clinton was secretary of state.
Financial whistleblower Charles Ortel, who previously found gaps within Clinton's foundation, said on FOX Business Network’s After the Bell that the disclosures from the foundation and Laureate transactions do not explain the money Bill was raking in.

The Clinton University Problem: Laureate Education Lawsuits Present Problem For Clintons [Updated]
The scandal involves a dubious Laureate Education for-profit online college (Walden) and entails many of the common elements with other Clinton scandals: huge sums given to the Clintons and questions of conflicts with Hillary Clinton during her time as Secretary of State. There are distinctions to draw between the two stories, but the virtual radio silence on the Clinton/Laureate story is surprising. [I have updated the original column with some additional thoughts, links, and clarifications for readers).
Bill Clinton worked as the “honorary chancellor” which sounds a bit like the group’s pitchman. He gave speeches in various countries and was heavily touted by the for-profit company to attract students. The size of this payment (which has been widely reported) raises obvious concerns as to what the company was seeking to achieve and whether Laureate received any benefit from the association with the State Department given its massive international operations.
Various sites have reported that the State Department funneled $55 million in grants during Hillary Clinton’s tenure to groups associated with Laureate’s founder. That would seem a pretty major story but virtually no mainstream media outlet has reported it while running hundreds of stories on the Trump University scandal.
It was nothing but an illegal kickback.
Money laundering, kickback, bribe, influence peddling, whatever you call it it’s ILLEGAL.......................
Bill Clinton was paid $5.6 million from an international for-profit educator after it entered into a partnership with the Clinton Global Initiative around the same time the former president hauled in $16.4 million from Laureate Education, tax returns show.
GEMS Education, a Dubai-based education management firm, was founded by billionaire educator Sunny Varkey in 2000 and consists of over 90 schools in 12 countries.
GEMS bills itself as a “broad-based education option.” It is the largest global education management firm in the world offering K-12 instruction with offices in the United Kingdom, United States, India, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, Kenya, the United Arab Emirates, and Switzerland. Laureate Education is a for-profit education firm; ex-Pres Clinton is a paid honorary chancellor.
This organization has some unusual practices.
For instance, its students serve as telemarketers who pitch the school to prospective new students. It operates in at least three countries (Turkey, Mexico and Chile) where for-profit universities are illegal, author Schweizer notes.
Douglas Becker (a FOB), runs the for-profit university, which engages Bill Clinton to give speeches several times a year. Based on Clintons gargantuan fee scale, that works out to Pres Bill getting perhaps $1 million a year from Laureate, Clinton Cash author Schweizer estimates.
(NOTE On falsified disclosure forms, Pres Bill revealed only that he has been paid more than $1,000 by Laureate.)
Becker also runs a related nonprofit, International Youth Foundation, which coincidentally found its federal grant money has exploded (according to author Schweizer) since Hillary became secretary of state (in 2009) and Bill became honorary chancellor of Becker/s profit-seeking company.
Many of International Youth Foundation grants came from tax dollars-—from a State Dept agency-—USAID.
Then SoS Hillary took official control of USAID, a move that dramatically reduced its independence, Clinton Cash author Schweizer says.

In April 2015, Bill Clinton was forced to abruptly resign from his lucrative perch as honorary chancellor of Laureate Education, a for-profit college company.
The reason for Clinton’s immediate departure: Clinton Cash revealed, and Bloomberg confirmed, that Laureate funneled Bill Clinton $16.46 million over five years while Hillary Clinton’s State Dept. pumped at least $55 million to a group run by Laureate’s founder and chairman, Douglas Becker, a man with strong ties to the Clinton Global Initiative.
Laureate has donated between $1 million and $5 million (donations are reported in ranges, not exact amounts) to the Clinton Foundation. Progressive billionaire George Soros is also a Laureate financial backer.
