Falling birth rates could spell end of the West - [Rabbi] Lord Sacks
The Telegraph (UK) ^ | 6 June 2016 | John Bingham

Posted on 06/07/2016 1:51:10 PM PDT by Mrs. Don-o

Western civilisation is on the brink of a collapse like that of ancient Rome because the modern generation does not want the responsibility of bringing up children, the former Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks has warned.

... ultimately, he said, European society as we know it “will die” because of the demographic crisis.

And mass immigration is not a solution because of problems integrating new arrivals into existing society.

"Europe is going to die because of this because Europe can only maintain its population by unprecedented levels of immigration" - Lord Sacks

This makes him one of only a handful of public figures in recent memory to raise the alarm about declining fertility rates as a serious social problem.

He also warned that Britain is losing its national “memory” and cultural identity

He explained: “People forget how Britain won its freedom -Civil war -- and the extraordinary thinking done by John Milton, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke.

“Freedom doesn’t just happen.

“You have the classic example of this, the Arab Spring, 2011. Now people start Googling and using Facebook, tyrants are toppled and you think, that’s it you press a button and Google will do the rest.

“Yes, tyrants were deposed but what succeeded them was not freedom but anarchy.

“And indeed terrible anarchy of a kind that we know basically from Hobbes after the wars of religion of Europe when he spoke about the state of nature as being the war of every man against every man in which life is ‘solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short’.

“[That] is a precise description of life in Syria or Iraq or Afghanistan or Somalia or Libya today. People think freedom is like the default setting on your phone.

“Freedom is not a default setting anywhere, freedom has to be fought for.”

There is an ever-greater bias against large families in most advanced civilized cultures, because of peer pressure (”You don’t want to bring even MORE children into this already crowded world, do you?”) and a sense of “having arrived”, the competition for more of the worldly share of goods and services is under far less stressful demand. That and the fact that procreation is almost completely separated from recreational sex, by various means of birth control and societal norms, has removed many of the former incentives for large families.

“The rich get richer, and the poor get children” is one of those catch phrases which takes on a much different meaning over the years. By restricting the size of the family, each member gets to enjoy much more of the fruits of the breadwinner than may otherwise be likely, while very poor families usually have the excess number of children as the obvious source of their continued penury.

But bringing in sizable numbers of lower-educated and highly prolific foreigners, most if not all of which do NOT share your ideals, dreams and aspiration, only results in the displacement of one ethnic group by another, not a continuation of the original ethnicity. History is rife with all kinds of examples of this, the original Classical Greeks (Aegeans) displaced by the Hellenistic “Greeks”, mostly Egyptians, and those in turn displaced mostly by persons who are the same root stock as Albanians.

I think working people might have more kids if they felt they could afford the investment in time/money. But government makes that hard.

Used to be one could easily raise a family on a single income. Nowadays both parents must work to make ends meet.

It sounds like a campaign slogan to end white privileged.

Some, like my hubby, think that the mass migration from the south to the north around the world is about wiping out the white RACE.

History rhymes. Roman citizens falling birth rates + immigration “subsidizing” the population drop = a crumbling culture/empire. Gibbons overlooked the birth rates of the Roman citizens while focusing on the Monarchy and Christianity way too much.

Trying again

G. K. Chesterton

"Surplus population"

"SCROOGE is not only as modern as Gradgrind but more modern than Gradgrind. He belongs not only to the hard times of the middle of the nineteenth century, but to the harder times of the beginning of the twentieth century; the yet harder times in which we live. Many amiable sociologists will say, as he said, "Let them die and decrease the surplus population." The improved proposal is that they should die before they are born.

"It is notable also that Dickens gives the right reply; and that with a deadly directness worthy of a much older and more subtle controversionalist. The answer to anyone who talks about the surplus population is to ask him whether he is the surplus population; or if he is not, how he knows he is not. That is the answer which the Spirit of Christmas gives to Scrooge."

~G.K. Chesterton: Introduction to A Christmas Carol. (1922)

Hitler won WWII. The U.S. and the governments of the so-called “free world” have been making war on the family and Christianity for more than 100 years.

Could be a point there. In its intense focus on the mortal, WWII forgot to focus on the spiritual, which was an intense shame because it could have taught some good lessons. Questions such as: How did Hitler get the way he did? got answered not in spiritual terms but in political ones, making us afraid of forceful politics in general rather than afraid of basing politics on the wrong thing.

However, “the family and Christianity” may have set itself up for an unnecessary fall too. As we might put it, Uncle Sam isn’t appointed to be your preacher, isn’t appointed to be your godfather. To wail and travail because such a thing is ceasing to be, is to mightily discount what God can do through the churches.

I would contend that the “Age of Anxiety” won and is still strong as ever. Shun God's desires/will and there is only the infallible creatures left that will “pick up” the “slack”/lead. This atmosphere is like shooting fish in a barrel to would-be dictators/central planners.

Sorry, “infallible creatures”. Forgot the parentheses to emphasize the folly of looking towards philosopher kings thinking they are a god unto themselves.

There are also religious leaders who will take advantage of such impulses in order to garner followings for their own glory.

Liberal DC ‘elites’ have made the country a
‘hellhole in process’. Who wants to bring children into this place? Liberal elites look down on traditional Americans...

Divide the country - let white liberal elites and their pet victim groups live in one half - and traditional Americans in the other half.

We have governments that will let millions of “refugees” walk in, but would never consider telling people to simply have some more kids! How about doing what’s actually needed to survive?

A number of governments have attempted, with money and other rewards, to persuade their citizens to have more children. Very little has been achieved. It is NOT a lack of money that is preventing procreation.

IMHO....The dwindling birth rates and fertility problems in the west can be traced, to a significant degree, to the metrosexual “men” wearing bikini briefs.

In order to have lots of healthy, virile sperm a man’s tackle must be free to swing freely below his body, and remain several degrees cooler than the 98.6° temp of his torso.

This DESIGN is obvious in most male mammals, from cattle to horses to swine, even. In swine they aren’t suspended, but they are openly exposed to the cooling breezes.
That’s how the Almighty designed it.
