Former attorney general: Trump right to question judges fairness
By Mark Hensch
Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales says Donald Trump is right to challenge the fairness a judge overseeing lawsuits against him.
An independent judiciary is extremely important. But that value is not the only one in play here, Gonzales wrote in a Saturday op-ed for The Washington Post.
"Equally important, if not more important from my perspective as a former judge and U.S. attorney general, is a litigants right to a fair trial, he continued.
The protection of that right is a primary reason why our Constitution provides for an independent judiciary. If judges and the trials over which they preside are not perceived as impartial, the public will quickly lose interest in the rule of law upon which our nation is based. Trump on Thursday said U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiels Hispanic ethnicity is an absolute conflict in three civil fraud lawsuits against the billionaire.
He said Curiels Mexican heritage makes him partial because of Trumps calls for a wall along Americas southern border with Mexico.

What! They don’t exist according to the MSM, Paul Ryan, Newt Gingrich and scores of others.
Judges hate this kind of publicity. Trump is going after him to show the kind of bigot corrupt cockroach he is. Trump will win this handily. Wow!
US District Court judges are a bunch of Prima Donnas.
Everything Trump has said, ya’all have said yourself, just not on TV.. He’s taken the political correct speech and torn it asunder... opened it up... and the “educated elite” are offended.
He is going after LaRaza through the judge.
Unfortunately, the so-called “justice system” is loaded with anti-white, racist judges nationwide. Our Supreme Court is staffed to the hilt with them as well.
But, Trump should point out that this particular judge has a history of supporting the illegal invasion, and the Mexican racist organization, La Raza.
It’s difficult to see Trump’s litigation strategy here. If Trump really thinks that being a Mexican, donation to Clinton and being an immigration advocate disqualifies a judge, he is wrong. If he thinks the judge is going to remove himself, or be removed, he doesn’t know the law. If he thinks that this will somehow make the judge rule his way, he’s a fool.
Clinton, Sanders and Trump are the worst presidential candidates of my lifetime.
I love the way Trump stands up and fights with no fear. Never lets PC stand in the way.
By talking about it it deflates the issue down the road - there can be no October Surprises with Trump. While Clinton refuses to discuss any scandal Trump takes it on full frontal.
He spent most of his career before being a judge prosecuting border-jumpers and drug smugglers. When did he ever "support the illegal invasion"?
and the Mexican racist organization, La Raza.
From the article: "NCLR is unaffiliated with La Raza Lawyers of San Diego. ... Curiel is not a member of NCLR."
You’re obviously a fool and an “oilpainter” but you’re just pretending to be a lawyer...Right?
Too bad Bush threw AG Alberto Gonzales under the bus...
Even if Trump is forced to eat damages on his controversial business school, now he’s turned the situation into a testimony to his resolve on the Hispanic-illegale issue. And so whatever enemies he gains could well be counterbalanced by the friends he also gains.
It’s been reported that Curiel is associated with an attorneys’ organization that in turn refers to the National Council of La Raza. If so, that should be a radioactive conflict of interest sign, but if Curiel believes in scorched earth, he hasn’t even seen political fire yet.
I have seen conflicting reports on this. Some say that this attorney’s association in turn touts a connection to the more infamous La Raza.
To keep the context in mind, it would be like an Anglo-Saxon judge talking about a Whiteboys Attorney Association. He’d get some curious looks if not absolutely panned for it.
Even Gonzales made it clear in the article that his Mexican ethnicity alone wasn’t enough alone would not be enough to raise a question of bias. Trump has ever right to raise the appearance of impropriety but does need to be able to communicate his concerns more succinctly instead of throwing around words like Mexican and wall that will make him a laughingstock in the general.
Trump might put out a presser asking what people would think about his prospective performance as president if he belonged to a Whiteboys’ Executive Association. Because that is an analogy to this La Raza attorneys’ association. Whether or not there is some formal tie to the National Council of La Raza, and I’ve seen disagreement on this.
I think you’d better shut your mouth about Trump and take a hike before Jim does it for you.
I belong to the Orange County Jewish Bar Association. Doesn't mean I'm bigoted against Christians.
