If anyone was "worried" about the Verizon strike taking away 35,000 jobs from the pro forma whisper number of 200,000 with consensus expecting 160,000 jobs, or worried about a rate hike by the Fed any time soon, you can sweep all worries away: moments ago the BLS reported that in May a paltry 38,000 jobs were added, a plunge from last month's downward revised 123K (was 160K). The number was the lowest since September 2010!
There is no way to spin this number as anything but atrocious.
The actual number is probably far worse than what's being reported ... we'll know more in a few hours after people have had a chance to analyze the adjustments made to the raw data by government bureaucrats.
That was unexpected.
The numbers are way down because it rained. Or maybe it snowed or got hot or something. If those excuses don’t fit then let’s blame W.
Just in time for graduation.
“The numbers are way down because it rained. Or maybe it snowed or got hot or something. If those excuses dont fit then lets blame W.”
And yet, unemployment dropped from 5.0% to 4.8%. Gotta love that Obama math.
Dishonest media “whispered” about 200K jobs - can’t blame 35K strikers at Verizon. Trump should/will ask how many jobs Crooked Hillary has ever created?
Really really bad report...
Only 26K private sector jobs. IT, Manufacturing and Construction all declined. Growth in healthcare.
Labor force participation tanked
Only positive was continued wage growth...
The numbers are a mess. Dollar tanking as the June rate hike is so far off the table that the table is gone.
Looks like we need another Recovery Summer. /sarc
Pretty soon the Obungo acolytes won’t report the number of new jobs - they’ll read the names of those who got them. Shouldn’t take all that long.
Almost half a million people left the work force, and that is the reason for the drop in the unemployment number.
Great job, Barry!
It is an absolutely horrible number. This report was for May. That is the month when most hiring is done in a good chunk of the country. Winter is over. Construction season is started and everything should be taking off.
Trump’s fault.
In other words, the Unemployment % is totally useless.
Keep in mind that they adjust for seasonality
There will be an extra little spring in Obama's step today.
It’s Trump’s fault
Gold is soaring, eh?
Looks to me like the PM markets smell helicopter money in the air...
Must have been the weather, or the Verizon strike was actually 150,000 workers.
Wag the dog in 3 2 1...
I’d like to read a deep dive on where these healthcare jobs are coming from. Probably not the VA, not Health Ins Co, they are getting killed with Odungacare Policies.
