Leaders of the Republican Party have begun internal deliberations over what would be fundamental changes to the way its presidential nominees are chosen, a recognition that the chaotic process that played out this year is seriously flawed and helped exacerbate tensions within the party.
In a significant shift, Republican officials said it now seemed unlikely that the four states to vote first would all retain their cherished place on the electoral calendar, with Nevada as the most probable casualty.
Party leaders are even going so far as to consider diluting the traditional status of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina as gatekeepers to the presidency. Under one proposal, those states would be paired with others that voted on the same day as a way to give more voters a meaningful role much sooner.
But in a move that would sharply limit who could participate in presidential primaries, many party activists are also pushing to close Republican contests to independent voters, arguing that open primaries in some states allowed Donald J. Trump, whose conservative convictions they deeply mistrust, to become the presumptive nominee.
Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina are sure to mount fierce resistance when the changes are debated in July at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, where party officials are planning to consider a variety of procedural and rule revisions. Normally overlooked and largely irrelevant in recent presidential elections, party rules gained considerable scrutiny this year as, until recently, Republicans faced the prospect of their first contested convention in 40 years.

Need a new way to massage the results, the last scheme having failed. I swear this is like watching Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner.
Or just have democrat super delegates.
No matter how the population votes - the establishment candidate wins.
Opening day should be one of the very big states...FL, TX, CA etc.
Unintended consequences.
Hold All primaries on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the same weekend.
Primaries should start in August with a regional every other week. Convention in late September. Campaign for 6 weeks and let’s move on (and I don’t mean dot org). If anyone mentions the presidential race before then, shoot them.
They better check their hole card before they make any foolish moves to limit the choices available to the voters.
Yes, unintended consequences.
Bet Trump isn’t going to fight taking Iowa off the list of first in the nation.
They should have voted Trump.
Would the NY Slimes have written this if Trump had never entered the race? This is nothing but concern trolling.
This time around I really liked it spread out over a long time.
Got to hear and see the Trump rallies many a time.
Plus I got to see Cruz slowly commit suicide.
And Jeb!, don’t forget Jeb slowly circling the drain, that was glorious.
Would have been a shame for all that to be over so quickly.
They still can’t believe they weren’t able to shove Yeb! down our throats like the shoved Milt Romley and Juan McQueeg and both Bushes and Bob Dull.
Lottery the year before
No caucuses hold a primary.
All votes must be secret - No stand over there if you support the slime-ball and over here if you support God’s choice.
No multilevel marketing scheme or chain letter conventions
No unbound - arbitrarily assigned delegates.
Compress the dates somewhat so that all primaries are in about 1 month. Rotate the states that get to start and yes, absolutely have a big state start every year.
I think the primary season is determined first by who decides to run.
Yeb! would be getting creamed about now if he was the nominee.
The platform was one thing, but it’s the Rules by sour grapes that Cruz delegates (posing as TRUMP’s EARNED delegates) want power over.
Until this year, I felt that open voting was a danger, also. This year changed my mind. TRUMP rocks!
The Cruz forces goal is to have no more repeats of TRUMP kicking their butt among new voters and cross overs, taking the delegate allotments for himself in state after state.
THis is GOPE thinking and guaranteeing more pastoral candidates will win the nomination easy enough, but lose in the future, once America votes, in a General Election.
TRUMP needs to get his supporters to register as REPUBLICANS for the future. That is, IF, they don’t jigger the RULES for this convention to knock TRUMP out somehow.
I don’t know where TRUMP supporters are placed for this Convention, that is, in enough numbers to matter, when the room is full of Cruzers voting on all things of importance.
Certainly this gang is NOT going to vote for ridding us of “delegates”, which delegates serve as their only path to a possible win, after being soundly rejected by the voters.
I strongly support your idea. It is way tooooo drug out.I would even support no campaigning or announcements until June 1 of the election year. That gives five months for primaries and general election. Time enough.
The GOP, Captains of Mull!
If we did that, then maybe we could all vote for President on the same day in November. I know! Let's call it "Election Day."
