Donald Trump dispatched his Republican rivals by branding each one with an insulting but memorable nickname: “Lyin' Ted” Cruz, “Little Marco” Rubio. As the general election campaign nears, Trump has settled on a label for the likely Democratic nominee: “Crooked Hillary.”
“It works,” he boasted to the New York Times. “It flows.”
The problem for Hillary Clinton is that he may be right.
All campaign long, pollsters have found that many voters — including some Democrats — don't think she's principled. Maybe it's her four decades in bare-knuckle politics, ancient questions about investment deals in Arkansas, her entanglement in her husband's personal scandals, her decision to set up a private email server when she was secretary of State, her big-dollar fundraising and speech fees — or all of the above. Fairly or not, Clinton can't shed her history.

Old rule of politics, label your opponent before they can label themselves.
In this case, Hillary is only helping Trump by owning the crooked Hillary moniker.
To defend herself, she has to use “I am not a crook.” How fitting.
He may be right! Yeah, sure he may be right...

Well then, according to Paula Jones, both Clintons are crooked.
Not simply crooked, but also, more and more, an INCOMPETENT crook.
Herself has no strategy to counter what is coming for Herself in the weeks after Labor Day. Herself doesn’t even have a strategy to hold position again Bernie Sanders.
Herself is ever more isolated and unloved as crunch time approaches. And The Donald says he sees “no need” to go to negative ads against Herself. Just revealing the various shortfalls and very real failures is quite enough.
Of course, Democrats consider reality and truth to be “negative”, even when taken fully in context.

With one caveat. The branding must be accurate. Or at least accurate enough that it sticks in the minds of people.

If she says “I am not crooked” (a la Nixon = strike one), all Trump has to do is to play her lies under oath, and her inability to remember anything pertaining to any of her many investigations (a la any goodfella mafioso = strike two), and thereby keep her on defense throughout the campaign (a la Mittwit = strike three, grab some bench!).
