COLUMBUS, OhioU.S. Sen. Rob Portman on Monday criticized North Carolina's restrictions on public bathroom access for transgender people and took issue with Donald Trump's proposal to cut the national debt by giving creditors less than full payment.
The Ohio Republican, speaking with reporters at a warehouse in Columbus, said North Carolina's new limits on protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are "a bad law."
"You need to not discriminate against people and be sure that we are respecting religious liberties," Portman said. "That can be done, and I do not believe that the North Carolina law accomplishes that."
Portman, who came out in support of same-sex marriage in 2013 after his son revealed he was gay, pointed to Utah's anti-discrimination law, which he said "achieved that balance."
The senator also voiced caution about reducing the national debt by persuading creditors to accept less than full payment, as suggested Friday by Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee.
Portman, who has endorsed Trump, said while he hasn't reviewed the details of Trump's proposal, the way to address the $19.2 trillion national debt "is not to take away from the full faith and credit that people believe they have when they buy treasuries."
He added, "I would be concerned about anything that would take away from that."
Portman's comments came after he accepted an endorsement from the National Federation of Independent Business.
Juanita Duggan, the new president of the Washington, D.C.-based NFIB, said small business owners "don't have a more dependable ally in Washington than Rob Portman," noting the senator has a 100-percent voting record for the group's key issues.

My wife and I had this argument. She thinks the LGBT debate is water under the bridge and that we are not going to win it, so lets find a bathroom compromise. I asked if she would say the same about abortion, and she thinks abortion is still up for debate. If it is water under the bridge, what about for states like NC? If they are socially conservative dont they have a right to uphold moral? Or are they just paddling against the inevitable?
We don’t have same sex bathrooms in GA either.
He could lose easily. The opponent was not a terrific governor, but he's better about US jobs staying here.
Rob Portman is a good guy -1,000 times better than his Dem opponent Strickland. Ted Strickland nearly bankrupted Ohio when he was our Governor. I will vote for Portman because he will work with Trump and he is better than Strickland.
I don't recognize this country anymore or its people.
Primary the SOB
That's nothing. Trump is also going to make pink ballerina skirts mandatory for the NFL, and is going to confiscate all the accordions and harmonicas.
No, Portman became an LGBT activist after his son told him he likes penises.
There you go.
Where would the money for the balloon come from?
Finally, a rational proposal.
Portman is confused about whether or not penises should be pointed at urinals when they are releasing urine? He thinks they should be pointed at flushes in the ladies’ room? And spray all over? And spread disease? There’s a reason for urinals being in the men’s room.
Britain. Although the final payment wasn’t made until 2006.
Maybe the other guy would have done better if he told the constituents that Rob Portman wants to deny women’s right to privacy by allowing transgender males to use women’s restrooms and locker rooms.
We need a list of Republican Senators who are up for re election this year so we can see who is loyal to the party nominee and who is not.
I don’t feel sorry for him one bit. I’m curious how the kid got gay.
WIMPY FATHER.....FORCEFUL MOTHER!! THAT’S how the kid got GAY!
NO....he’s got a HOMOSEXUAL SON....PERIOD!! THAT TRUMPS NATIONAL SECURITY!!
Sadly, he feels PRIDE in his GAY SON, or he wouldn’t be DEMEANING HIMSELF.
The vast majority of “conservatives” are really “bourgeois.” Go along. Be reasonable. Collect a paycheck and don’t raise “philosophical” questions. Portan is a perfect example. He is a notoriously upbeat, high-on-life type guy. Wdll-adjusted.
